brew day

since I had Monday off work for the holiday, I figured it would be a good day to brew that IPA that I had been wanting to do.

getting the ingredients together..liquid malt extract, crystal specialty grains, hops and yeast

...and water. I went with bottled this time over the tap water which should be a bit better

getting the tools together...fermenter, thermometer, hydrometer and the all important sanitizer

more tools...brew pot, stirring spoon and another thermometer

and of course the most important tool of all...A BEER!

3 gallons of water in the pot heating to 155 degrees

specialty grains getting bagged up

grains go into the pot to steep for 30 minutes

at the end of 30 minutes...notice how much darker the water is now that all the sugars have been extracted from the grains

time to bring it up to a boil and add 2 pounds of malt extract

along with 1 ounce of cascade hops

you can see the proteins floating to the top here

30 minutes into the boil and time to add 1 ounce of glacier hops

adding the hops really kicks up the boil

45 minutes into the boil and in goes the remaining malt extract

58 minutes and in go 1 ounce of US golding hops

60 minutes, the boil is over and it's time for an ice bath to get the wort (unfermented beer) down to about 80 degrees

cooled down, into the fermenter and topped up to bring it up to the 5 gallon mark

all put away in the "brew closet". I have it in an ice bath to help regulate the temperature where it will stay for about 2 weeks before getting transferred to a secondary fermenter where I'll be aging it on oak chips for another couple weeks.

It should turn out to be a nice hoppy beer at about 7.3% alcohol
