Tactical Nuclear Penguin Is Go!

OK, I've mentioned the possibility of a beer of this name from BrewDog a couple of times, most recently about a month ago when I drunkenly questioned their head honcho at the share launch in London. He was being cagey (or wary of drunk people) but my best bet was that it existed and it was going to be an "ice beer" (frozen to get the alcohol ( Read more... )

Well the Tokyo* definitely works well between a few people. I'll drink a whole one to myself at some point but shared between three you get a reasonable "glass of port".

For the penguin they are saying "This is an extremely strong beer, it should be enjoyed in small servings and with an air of aristocratic nonchalance. In exactly the same manner that you would enjoy a fine whisky, a Frank Zappa album or a visit from a friendly yet anxious ghost." So it looks like sharing is what they expect people to do with it, which makes sense. Except for those people who usually drink half a bottle of whisky in one go. Naming no names.

It sounds like one reason for the long time in the whisky casks was to mellow it to counteract any harshness that they'd otherwise get from the freezing. Maybe they used two different casks as they didn't want it overly peaty, which a year and a half in an Islay cask might have made it. Just a guess.
It does rather sound like it should have ended up rather thick, yes.
But definitely interesting.

By the way, have you had any of the Harviestoun Ola Dubhs? I should give them a try at some point.

I reckon drinking a bottle of it is about the same as five and a bit pints of a 4% bitter. They do advise "small servings" though.

I argue only with the term beer -- beer is brewed, while this starts brewed, it's then freeze distilled.

Not that it doesn't sound like it's worth trying.

This blog post also asks the "is it beer" question. Though someone in the comments claims it is, and the process is not the same as distillation.
I don't overly care, I'd just like to drink the stuff.

Wow, lethal penguins!

Nice to see that all that voting for the name wasn't completely wasted, though it did seem like a bit of a foregone conclusion at the time.

And they managed to get it out before the end of the Year of the Penguin. Croydon really needs a bottle of this at least (that should be enough for all of Croydon fandom).

Yep, these penguins are definitely of the "tactical nuclear" strength.
Somehow I don't think we're going to be able to decorate the flat with empties. A bit of a shame that I'll probably only get to drink something called that once. If at all.

Bugger. That discount code doesn't seem to work any more.
