I don't think Claire's convinced by lambics yet. As there were so many other beers she wanted to drink I expect she only had a taste of this before continuing on her search for the blackest beer known to humanity.
The bottom of your boiler looks just like ours (except for the penguin picture!)
I managed to pick up a couple of the presumably more common Belgian beers, produced by trappist monks, in Devon of all places - you covered them in the first few, I think. Quite interesting, but I still prefer yer average ale.
I did think the bottom of our boiler wasn't the best subject for a photo, but... Oh, and it's hard to take pictures anywhere in our flat without the odd penguin or two getting in there. Glad to hear you're experimenting a bit. Chimay and Westmalle are about the easiest Trappists to get hold of. Nothing wrong with "yer average ale", as long as it's a good "average ale". Which makes sense to me.
I always like to experiment on beer, particularly in pubs, even if I do have my particular favourites. I managed to consume a pretty good range of Cornish & Devonian beers while we were down there, even if the St. Austell Tribute, which I'd already had before going there, was the pick.
Chimay is indeed one (three, actually) of the beers I picked up, along with glass :) Not sure of the other. I think it may have been Westvleteren. I did prefer those to the Chimay.
The last time we were down that neck of the woods we drank a fair bit of Doom Bar. Now it seems to be everywhere. Tribute's definitely nice.
The Trappist was much more likely to be Westmalle than Westvleteren. Similar names but one's reasonably common and the other really isn't. I'd agree to them being better than Chimay though.
