It looks like echolex and I will be on vacation in California for the first week in September, what should we see/do? We're primarily going to be in N. CA around San Jose, San Francisco and San Cramento, but may head south to the greater LA metropolitan area.

Help!

Here's a link to a good primer on giving tours to "San Francisco Virgins".

You gotta walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and take a ferry boat ride in the bay.

Also a good place to start is Twin Peaks, where you can get a great overlook of the city and then figure out where you want to visit that day. ( http://elevenfish.com/gallery/san_fran_day1/index.html a photo gallery of when i took some friends there ).

The Museum of Modern Art is also worth the trip.

You gotta take a trip on Bart. It's the subway-train system. Pretty slick.

I wish I'd be home, I'd give ya a tour, but I'm stuck in Michigan till November.

Oh. I forgot to mention. Hit "House of Nan King" for some good Chinese food. It's the best place in the city. The lines may be long, but it's worth it. Not much of a place to look at, but it has a great reputation. Let the owner fix you whatever he wants, as he'll get angry if you order off the menu. It's right across from the Copolla Building, which is just up from the TransAmerica Pyramid.

Visit me! :)

There are a couple of awesome bars that I love, like Zeitgeist and Toronado. Also, there is historical stuff or touristy stuff. A lot of museums and galleries as well.

if you are going to be north of san francisco, rent a car and drive highway 1 to point Reyes national park, you can see whales off the point and some really nice woods. On the way stop at muir woods to see the redwood forrest, that is really cool.

Napa and Sonoma vallies are fun, you can stay in a town called Glen Ellen (reasonable rates).

in san francisco, there is the exploretiroium (AAHOM on steroids) and just about anything else you could want to do.
