He came home later than the night before. But she never went to sleep. She waited because she wanted to, not because she felt obligation of any sort. And he was always broken. Every night was harder than the last. And he came in, his tie already loosened because he felt claustrophobic with it on too tight, especially after the alcohol. The anger was faulty-she could never count on the level of it on a given night.
"Jack," She stated. And she wasn't expecting a response. He came in to their room and sat on the bed, his eyes glazed and his mind wandering. "Jack, please. I want to help you."
"You don't. I don't deserve help," He muttered, his voice dark.
"Yes, Jack, you do. Nobody expects you to do this on your own."
"How can you fucking say that, Kate? You're not supposed to be consoling me now! You're supposed to hate me!" He shouted. He was shaking, now. It scared her-the trembling, the red eyes. She didn't know if she should hate him, but every ounce of her being told her to be his guardian. She wanted to protect him like he had her.
"How could I?" She asked as the tears welled. "How could I hate you? You saved me, Jack. Don't deny that."
His fists clench and his voice shook. The alcohol on his breath wafted out, filling the air with angst.
"You fucking saved yourself."
And he laid down on the covers, himself an unguarded man. He ripped the tie off that in his mind was choking him. He fiddled with the buttons on the top of his shirt, frustrated, until Kate took over. She slowly undid one, two."I won't hate you Jack," she whispered. She brought his chin to face her eyes. "I won't hate you when you want me to, and I won't hate you when I want me to. I'm with you for this," She told him, and she meant it. His commitment was unclear and unreliable, but she was invested. "And I know you're with me."
