Her hands were locked together, bound by metal.
She was frustrated but still determined.
She was mystified by his actions. Jack saw it on her face. He read her like the Sunday morning paper-she was angry at what he'd done, and how he hadn't immediately been relieved when she came for him. He was scared about what she thought at this point, because it's not like he wanted to be without her. It wasn't like he didn't feel thankful that she had risked so much to come and get him.
At first he thought she was going to come straight out and say it. But then she shriveled back into the cocoon which she wound herself-her hair in pieces over her dirt streaked face, her hands guarding her body.
And she asked him about this place. What's it like, and where are those kids? Homely. Nice. And they're safe. She stared at him in disbelief. Those words out of his mouth- where was the hero? Where was he?
"They're going to let me leave," Jack said to the floor.
Kate rose up for the pool table which she had resided on. She walked over, skeptic, wondering.
"Leave to where?" She repeated. Her eyes bore into him. He shrugged.
"Home," he said, and his eyes almost lit up, but he remembered her, there, again.
"You trust them? You know what these people did." And she approached him, leaning down, their hands wrapped inside each others. Everything was out now-the room was no longer that safe haven. Their foreheads hung inches apart, their faces raw with sweat and their eyes meeting for seconds at a time.
"I trust them, Kate. You let me trust them."
Juliet opened the door and told Jack, we have to go soon. And he hurried her out with his smooth words, and Kate turned in disgust, or maybe it wasn't disgust, it was loneliness and that hurt, gutless feeling.
"I asked you not to come back here for me and I wish-" he sighed. "I wish you hadn't."
And he began to leave, and her head pounded with the devastation and engulfing of the awful feelings.
"But I will come back for you."
