"Oh, my poor wife!" he sighed.

These were his last words. His final thought was for Lucile [...] A click, a heavy sound. The head fell.

Only mildly off-topic, but I've never noticed how small Lucile's hand is compared to Camille's in that painting.

Yeah, it is. I think I've read before that Lucile was a petite woman, but Camille's hand is rather large here. By the way, did you happen to see this painting in Paris yet? I forget where it's even located now. Carnavalet?

I've also heard that Lucile was petite, but I think you're right...Camille's hand must be a bit exaggeratedly large here as well.

I've not seen this painting, alas! :( According to this, it's actually located at Versailles. Huh. I didn't see it when I visited, but then again, I wasn't really looking for/expecting such a thing at Versailles. I've now done a bit of research on their website, and it would appear the painting is indeed there and located in the 'Corps central, attique Chimay, salle Portraits.' So should I happen to pop by there again at any point before leaving France (and now I kind of actually want to, just to see this in real life...), I'll certainly go find it!

I read Sanson's account of how he brought Lucile's hair to her parents. It was extremely moving... The hair was in a locket, it was not a loose strand, like in the scene shown in Les Annees Terribles. By the way, was Lucile a blonde? Here, she appears to be a brunette.
