Various people are interviewed on camera.
Lester is asked for names - not his names, the missing peoples' names.
Becker is asked for his name.
Does Lester think they're alive? "Do you want me to speculate?"
Becker hasn't found any bodies. He's clearly not enjoying this.
Lester points out that they're in the future, so of course they're alive - they won't die for centuries. Ha!
Becker says they tried looking, but when Sarah...
Lester points out that Helen hasn't been seen since. "You didn't know her. Lucky you. Nasty woman, wore a lot of khaki."
Becker doesn't know what happened to the others, though he thinks about it all the time.
Lester thinks the ARC should never have been suspended. The Members of the House of Commons, who apparently came face to face with a Stegosaurus, agree. How do you cover up something like that?
Jess watches the footage.
So does Matt; he recognises it.
"You don't seem very surprised by it."
"I've been told I don't have a very expressive face."
Anyway, he was prepared, because of all the weird interviews and things.
Jess is just worried about actually coming face to face with the dinosaurs, but she's assured that won't happen.
Lester's very busy looking for another job and doesn't have time for this.
Jess is a team co ordinator, "the best team co ordinator you're gonna find."
Becker has resigned and the interviewer asks him to reconsider.
"James Lester feels they're still alive. Abby, Connor, Danny."
Lester wants Becker back.
The ARC will be allowed to continue, 'in one form or another."
Becker wanders through the new ARC. He meets Jess, who's been all on her own in the building for two weeks.
"I'm supposed to report to Parker."
"Jess Parker, at your service."
Matt reports on the phone to some guy with an English accent. They discuss Matt's (faked) background.
"It's not enough to just impress them. You have to intimidate them."
Jess shows Becker Matt's file. Becker has questions about the way the ARC is running now; it's fifty/fifty government/private, and Lester has to keep both the Minister and Philip Burton, the head of Prospero, happy.
Matt's CV is pretty impressive. He's also the only candidate at the moment.
"Why some people feel the need to boast about things..."
"Insecure much?...anyone would think you don't want your boss to be better than you are."
"Oh, I see, you're making fun of me."
"Totally. Just checking to see if you smile. And you do! Which means so far? Way better company than the mammoth."
Matt wanders around, not at all suspiciously. His phone rings and he arranges to meet someone. He calls back the English guy to tell him he's in.
"You're ready for this."
"I know."
"You've worked hard for this, and you're the perfect candidate. Not just for the job, but for the mission. Now whatever happens, don't mess it up."
Matt looks solomn. Maybe.
Matt watches Prospero's recruitment video. Jess is watching from behind him, mouthing along.
"Sorry. I've just seen this video with every new recruit this month. Not that you're a new recruit. You're the boss. My boss."
"Matt's fine."
Matt asks about Burton; Jess doesn't know much about him, but he doesn't have an office in the ARC. She gives Matt his ID, a snap bracelet that reacts to his DNA and won't work for anyone else.
Becker arrives. The pair immediately start a very polite argument about the uniforms.
"I think the whole black thing's a bit - conspicuous."
"Conspicuous. It promotes unity and gives my men authority in the field."
"I suspect the big guns would have the same effect."
Becker cites Cutter and Quinn as his authorities, which seems weird; neither were soldiers.
Matt reports to the English guy. No one seems to be picking up Anomaly research yet. Matt's met Lester;
"Light on civilities, heavy on sarcasm, he's hard to read."
He has no real opinion about Jess, but Becker
"Becker? He likes guns."
"That's all you've picked up about him?"
"He really likes guns."
Matt's picked up Becker's guilt complex, and also that he doesn't seem to care about the actual Anoamlies.
"I don't think he's the man we're looking for."
Matt and Jess wander through the ARC. Becker catches up and asks about non lethal weapons Matt has ordered. Matt calmly asks Jess to get him extra shelves -
"I've got a lot of plants."
Becker throws an upper class wobbly at the thought of fighting off dinosaurs with non lethal weapons. Matt is very calm.
Matt leads a meeting of the ARC staff. There seems to be approximately eight of them.
Lester listens in as Matt explains the new rules.
Military only in the field, no new civilian recruiting, and he's a door always open boss.
Also, he believes Abby, Connor and Danny are alive despite the official finding of Missing, Presumed Dead. He hopes to work with them sometime and refuses to give up.
Jess shows off the new Black Boxes. They are GPS and recorder all at once. They also hook to the comms. Lester wants everyone wearing them, all the time. Becker approves.
Jess points out that they'll stop working if the wearer goes through an Anomaly, and Becker reminds her loudly that policy is now no trips through an Anomaly for any reason. No exceptions. Jess is a little upset about this.
Also, Becker's developed a magical ability to make his earpiece disappear and reappear between shots.
Jess meets him again later, apologising. Becker also apologises.
"I know you've been asking around about the old team. That's ok. You can ask me anything you like, I won't bite your head off."
Becker quietly explains that even though Abby and the others went to the future, they decoded enough of Helen's notebook to be fairly sure they're actually in the past, somewhere around Site 333.
Matt switches off his black box to talk to English Guy.
"Becker's a pain in the proverbial, but he's good at what he does."
English Guy, now addressed as Gideon, calls him Matthew and warns him against becoming too close to his team.
"Sometimes I think this is impossible. Sometimes I think we're going to fail."
"We won't."
"But we're running out of time!"
He hangs up and Matt sighs, looking - something. Troubled? I kind of suck at expressions anyway.
