Primeval: Season Four, Episode One

Jul 25, 2012 17:41

So quick recap - in fact, I'll let Lester do it for me:

Five years ago I was put in charge of the ARC, a top secret government project investigating rips in time known as Anomalies. These Anomalies allow long extinct creatures from distant eras to cross into our own time....

A new team was put in place and many changes made to the ARC. Their battle continues. There is always a new threat. Whatever it is, we'll deal with it.

Danny is trapped in the Rift Valley, four million years ago. Connor and Abby are trapped in the Cretaceous, something between seventy five million years ago and seventy one million years ago. No one in the ARC knows where or when they are, and in current time they've been missing for a year.

On an out-of-world note, I love that my DVD case tells me Gideon and Ethan are joining the team this year. Brilliant.

Credits. No pictures of the cast this year.

A blasted, acid landscape with a yellow sky.

Matt jerks awake to hear an alarm going off. The Dracorex has escaped; various workers run around. Matt wanders calmly down a corridor, getting Jess to guide him over the comms.

Matt uses a tray as a shield, which seems to give the Dracorex a headache. He ducks into a corridor to avoid it and it heads for the Hub. Matt warns Jess to leave but by the time she does the Dracorex has got there. Lester, Matt and Becker arrive from different directions.

Matt blocks Becker's attempts to catch it, drawing it away with some water.

"No, no no no not my office...So there was nowhere else it could go?"

"I was improvising."

Abby, looking rather more rugged than before, picks her way through the Cretaceous. Something is sneaking up on her and she's very wary.

No, it's all right, it's Connor. Also very rugged; the beard makes him look much older.

The pair start mock fighting, and Connor's doing well, until he stops to gloat, and then she knocks him off his feet.

Back at their elaborate base, Abby's shaving Connor, who is paying very little attention to the blade at his throat.

He ducks out to check his home made ADD - metal suspended inside other metal - but it's a false alarm.

Connor's eager to believe they'll get home some day. Abby's resigned to simply surviving. And apparently given up on shaving him, since she sets him to peeling a root and/or bulb. Connor's a bit sick of their diet. Abby's a bit sick of sympathising, apparently. Connor heads out to do some fishing.

The Dracorex is tearing Lester's office apart. He attempts to pin it on Jess, who's actually to blame, but Matt steps in instead. Lester may or may not believe him, but he pretends to, anyway.

"Jess?"

"It was..."

"My fault, James. Sorry. I was overseeing some maintenance at the Menagerie."

"You know, I could have been Ambassador to Moscow by now. Maybe even cabinet secretary. Instead I'm watching a dinosaur trash my office. Still, no regrets."

Becker heads into the office to tranq the Dracorex. When he comes back out Matt tells him to head to the armoury to see the new EMDs. Becker's not a fan.

Connor is spear fishing, very successfully, when he hears noises. A large dinosaur chases him.

At the base, Abby picks through a well worn book, a diary of some kind. Several pages fall out and, frustrated, she throws them into the fire and starts crying.

Moments later Connor yells her name and she forcibly calms herself down, going to see what's wrong.

Connor leaves his spear outside and ducks in. For a moment Abby faces down the dinosaur before turning and ducking back in. The pair sit at the very back of the camp while the dinosaur rages outside before finally giving up and leaving.

Abby decides they need to move camp; Spinosaurus is territorial and it'll be back to get them. Connor's adamant about not leaving the Anomaly site, but Abby, who has completely given up hope of rescue, talks him into it.

"We're been here a year, Connor. A year. And nothing has happened. Just face it. We're stuck here. Alone. Forever."

"You're wrong. And we're not alone. We're together."

"If we stay here, that Spinosaurus will kill us. Only a matter of time."

Becker arrives at the armoury. He loudly disdains the new weapons, a variant on tasers.

"Try it. I mean it, shock me. If I think it's an effective weapon, I'll use it. If not, you back down."

"You really, really don't don't want me to do that, Becker."

Matt ends up shooting him. Jess is appropriately horrified.

"Will you stop being such a pair of kids?"

"He started it."

Connor and Abby hike. They hear a Raptor and run for cover, leaving Abby's bag behind. A Raptor approximately two feet away can't seem to smell or hear them, instead rooting through Abby's bag and stealing her survival blanket. Abby chases it.

Back at the ARC Matt and Becker have some 'friendly' banter. Becker shows off his shiny guilt complex.

"How long until this wears off?"

"The burning, couple of hours. Headaches, couple of days. The humiliation - well, that kind of depends when I get bored of it, really."

"Danny, Connor, Abby. The one thing I can do here is make sure that never happens again."

"It wasn't your fault. You know that."

"It was my job to look after them. I...failed."

"It was a year ago. You really need to let it go now."

Philip Burton arrives and makes fun of Lester. He also waves his connections in Lester's face. Then he leaves. Apparently that's all he came to the ARC to do.

Lester asks Jess to hack Philip's diary, but she refuses. Why does Lester look so weird to me in this episode?

"No private hacking."

"Excuse me? Whatever happened to blind obedience?"

Burton finds Matt in a greenhouse type lab and asks why he covered for Jess. Matt is unflapped.

"You're a terrible liar. To be honest, I don't really need to know. Good management is about picking the right people for the job and letting them get on with it - till they screw up."

Abby and Connor watch the Raptor put the blanket into a nest. Connor heads out to retrieve it; he also finds his gloves and, a bare second ahead of the Raptor's return, Helen's handheld.

Connor plays with it as they walk; they pass by one of his ADD contraptions, and are they walking in circles?

"Take the battery out and shake it or something."

"Oh, for..."

"Whatever the equivalent is, then. It always worked on the TV remote."

It powers up and Connor attempts to open an Anomaly. Nothing happens at first, but then his ADD goes off and they find an Anomaly nearby.

As they approach, though, the Spinosaurus blocks their path.

The ARC has detected an Anomaly. Jess sends a team out.

Connor and Abby hide from the Spinosaurus, which doesn't seem to be trying to get through the Anomaly, just stand in front of it. Abby comes up with a plan. Connor doesn't like it, but she goes anyway.

ARC Jeeps - they're now black instead of white - tear out of the ARC.

Abby uses the blanket to lead the Raptor over to fight the Spinosaurus. Abby and Connor take advantage and throw themselves through the Anomaly.

They're in an industrial area.

Cars screech up at them and soldiers pile out, yelling things. Connor and Abby are forced to the ground. Connor watches them use a variant of his Locker to seal the Anomaly.

Boots appear by their heads.

It's Becker and there is hugging.

"I hope you brought me back a souvenir. Where the hell have you been?"

"Well, you know, here and there. We would have called but the reception was terrible."

"We came looking for you. We sent four missions. We tried everything."

"It doesn't matter now. We're back. And everything is gonna be just fine."

I know, most of those caps don't match the words. I just love hugs.

Jess informs Lester. His first thought is for Danny.

"Connor and Abby came through the Anomaly! They're back, they made it!"

"Well, what about Danny?"

Becker also asks about Danny. Connor had been hoping Danny had made it home without them.

Matt pulls up and introduces himself. Connor offers to close the Anomaly with his handheld, but something goes wrong and he opens it instead. The Spinosaurus bursts through.

Matt is very forgiving. Everyone piles into Jeeps to chase it.

Lester pretends not to care if Abby and Connor are all right.

"What's going on?"

"Creature incursion."

"Trust Connor to bring a pet back with him. But...they're all right, are they?"

"So far."

"Good. Keep it that way, I want them back here in one place."

Becker's soldiers utterly fail at keeping an eye on either Abby and Connor, or their vehicles. The pair drive off after the Spinosaurus.

Matt commandeers a bin lorry to help corral the dinosaur.

Jess directs them to an arena nearby.

Becker stops to take the phone from a guy who videoed the dinosaur. Hmm, just like Jack did that one time...except no one took his phone, probably.

The Spinosaurus attacks Matt's lorry, but Abby and Connor arrive in time to distract it. It chases them off. Matt tells Jess to call the car and tell them what to do.

Connor and Abby are amusingly flustered by the voice from nowhere. Jess functions as their GPS to get them to the arena.

"Uh - this is Connor Temple. Sorry about nicking your car."

"Don't scratch the paintwork."

Lester's still pretending he doesn't care.

"Why aren't they back yet? Are they ok?"

"They've stolen a car."

"Right, so they're fine then."

Connor and Abby lead the Spinosaurus into the arena. Matt and Becker are behind them. Various weapons are deployed.

Connor's still trying his handheld. Abby's for letting Becker and his men deal with things, but she still follows Connor.

Connor accidentally blocks the line of fire while trying to use the handheld.

"Does he do this kind of thing often?"

"Yeah, every now and again."

"And how does it normally turn out?"

"Mmmm..."

Abby climbs up to a control desk to distract the Spino. Matt and another soldier run off.

Abby hits lots of buttons. The Spino is advancing on Connor when the music and lights kick in, disorienting it.

I know in the TV broadcast this music was S Club 7, but on the DVD it's some random techno. Not nearly as cool. Oddly, the online subtitles I'm using has the lyrics for S Club, so they were obviously done from the TV broadcast...

Connor tries again, ignoring Becker's yells. Matt abseils down from above, grabbing Connor's jacket and hauling him up out of the line of fire.

I know that for safety reasons, ALP had to have a harness, but I really wish they'd made it less obvious, since Matt never gets low enough to hook anything to Connor. Sigh.

The rope jams, leaving them in mid peril; finally Connor drops the handheld. Spino eats it and an Anomaly opens inside him.

Connor and Abby enter the Hub. Lester is sarcastic at them, but Abby hugs him anyway. Connor tries, but the sarcasm overwhelms him.

"Don't tell me, you missed the last bus and had to walk."

"Something like that. It's so good to see you."

"Oh...you too."

"Aw!"

"I think the point's been well made. Don't you?"

"Probably."

Lester asks about Danny again, but Connor still knows nothing. And he's distracted by the ADD anyway. Jess is very happy to meet him.

"Becker's told me everything. You guys are like legends around here."

"Cheers, mate."

"Whatever. I thought you were dead."

Philip arrives in time to cut off questions about Sarah. Connor gets both feet in his mouth at once while being introduced.

"He's like a living legend. If all the Fantastic Four were rolled into one, he'd look a bit like this. But not be a super hero, obviously. He's more of a science nerd."

"Thank you for the compliement, I think."

"Yeah, no, it was meant as...I'm just overexcited. Why are you here?"

Philip tells them that field staff have to be military now. Abby and Connor don't take it very well.

"You don't get it. All the time we've just spent away, all the sacrifices we had to make, it was all for this! So we could come back and carry on with Professor Cutter's work! So we could fight until we actually won!"

Jess, Matt and Becker watch through the office window as Connor and Abby yell. Well, Connor yells. Abby is mostly bitter.

"It's for your own good, Connor."

"Is it?"

Gideon waits in a nice garden until Matt arrives. He gives him a rare plant.

Matt tells him Connor and Abby are back. Gideon asks about Danny and Helen, and about what will happen to Connor and Abby now. Matt says it's out of his hands. Gideon thinks they'd do better inside the ARC.

"Connor Temple is gifted. No one knows more about the Anomalies. If they were inside the ARC, you could keep an eye on them."

"It's out of my hands now."

"It's a beautiful world, Matthew. But for how much longer?"

Connor wakes to find himself alone in bed.

He wanders out to a balcony where Abby is watching the sunrise.

"You keeping watch?"

"Still feels like one of us has to keep guard."

"Yeah. Why don't I take the next shift? You get some rest."

"I'm happy here, with you."

AND THEY KISS THEY'VE TOGETHER ASHISJOEGWANGJSDFB.
