The book is something I call upon when I need something tangible to hold onto when I think of him. It is the only thing I have, save from my own memories, that connects me

Hey.

The book is an artifact. Like all good artifacts, this book tells a story - and not just the one between its covers. I think in the aftermath of a tragedy it's not unusual for people to desire some tangible reminder of what once was. I'm so pleased you got the book back. I hope it has brought you some comfort to have it. It's less the object and more its meaning as a symbol, right?

You mentioned on your comment imploring me to check this entry of yours that you may wish to post this story to Facebook. I suppose the anniversary of the date of Tom's death is coming up. If you know a lot of his friends in common, your story might help them give some meaning to their grief, and give them a chance to add some new perspective on the space he occupied in your lives. But it's also for you. You deserve to let it be known how you feel.
