Going to Hokkaido

We are planning to go Hokkaido in late May, without the kids and with dh's partners. We are thinking whether to go free and easy or through guided tour. Anyone being there? Any recommendations of must go places? Hotels, etc?

It's also one of the place I want to go this year :)
I might try a guided tour then do an extension. We did a F&E last June but felt that guided tour tend to provide much better accomodation and some main sightseeing trips.

Anyhow you do it, enjoy the planning too! :)
