dog, interruptedRoot, the good dog, just stole Dent's dog cookie full of downers. very bad, Root. The vet says that she is bigger than him, though she should be really relaxed today. Only two hours later, she couldn't move. I don't think they understand that these horse tranquilizers had the crazy dog's eyes rolling in the back of his head. It ( Read more... )

I've never understood why people would want to use slurs to refer to one another.

I mean, I know girls that refer to each other as "bitch" all the time.

I know some people look at it like you're "taking back" the word and giving it a new meaning.

But I just... don't really get it. There will always be people offended by it, no matter what "new meaning" you've given it - so you're not really doing yourself any favors.

Yeah, I don't know. I think when someone has never used the term derogatorily, it's easier for them to claim they are 'taking it back'... they do this more because they don't have a true understanding of how it was used in the first place. e.g. my ex-gf loved using the term dyke, but I had only heard it used negatively so I just didn't get it. I think she had only used it as a taken back term and had never really heard it in a negative context so it wasn't an issue for her. So much drama. :(

Fuck ignorance. Or something less hostile, but seriously. That, and here here, Ghandi!

I just sent a long facebook message to the organizer. I don't think it will change anything, but I am tired of feeling invisible. There were like 8 of my family members there, who wouldn't have cared whether 'Candace' joined.

Yeah... it's hard to reach people once they've reinforced an idea in their head over several years. I mean, I had countless arguments with Nick about similar negative associations related to race, some where I put in a significant effort to persuade him of the flaw in his logic, and to no avail. On the other hand, he clearly had little respect for me and maybe this organizer has some for you, but that's beside the point.

I know it's a cracked article and all, but it's one of those logical fallacies where people get it in their head and stick with it for the sake of being right.

"I can't buy anymore white cars from you, Sneaky Pete. They keep blowing up. What other colors do you have in this model?" (from this Cracked article, that is)

Yes, I think I've read pretty much every cracked article you've linked to... :)

I do think ppl change... Esp over time. One day, Nick may overhear an offensive comment and find himself making exactly the same logical arguments you made to him when he said something offensive. You won't be around to say, I told you so, but he will have grown into a better person just from being exposed to you.

I hate when I'm wrong more than anyone and I rarely admit when I've lost at that moment. But three weeks later, losing that argument will have made me a better person, and not just bc I wiki'd more support for my original argument. I do think we can learn from each other even when we disagree, and I do often find myself recycling other ppl's arguments where I've lost to make my friends better ppl... And also bc I like winning. ;)
