I'm off to Senegal and the Gambia in a week, my first visit to West Africa in mumblemumble -- OK, fine, sixteen -- years. I'm curious what it will be like, but also, surprisingly for really-not-particularly-introspective me, what I will be like ( Read more... )

This is easier, of course, when you're good at travel, which is very much a skill. By dint of long practice I have become quite adept.
What can you teach us about travel-fu, sensei?

Will be interested to hear your experiences of Gambia - I have a very negative impression of Gambia based on the few days I spent there in early 2012, but I suspect that was coloured by the grim awfulness of the coastal resorts and the incessant sexual harassment. I want to believe better of it!

This assumes, of course, I can even get into Gambia, as visa-at-the-border reports are mixed. (The primary reason I'm going to Senegal, rather than back to Ghana or Cote d'Ivoire, is that it's effectively visa-on-arrival and I couldn't be bothered to mail my passport to DC or NYC.) But if I do, I shall report back.

Hm, is that a recent thing? I got a visa at the border in Feb 2012 with no problem at all (coming in from Ziguinchor, Senegal) but of course things change.
