Star Trek Into Darkness Ranty McRant

May 17, 2013 20:01

Okay, this isn't entirely a rant. I'll freely admit I hated the movie on first viewing. As in, hated with the fiery passion of a thousand suns. But having had a week to mull it over - and a second viewing with awarrington helped a fair bit - I've downgraded to ambivalent.

In which I rant about science... )

star trek, science is cool

I had far more mixed feelings about this movie than the last one, there's issues with it on multiple levels. However, the K/S dynamic in it was definitely the saving grace for me. I'm willing to overlook a lot of the... JJ-ness of the rest of the movie for the character moments which were still thankfully given. (ZOMG Zombie tribble!!! Gah JJ, people don't need to be hit over the head with it that hard, allow for some suspense ( ... )

I LOVE that image! I'm expecting lots and lots of scenes in post-STID fanfic in which Kirk and Uhura sit around gossiping about Spock.

I was actually really surprised at how much the Spock/Uhura didn't bother me in this movie. It helped that there were no PDAs in the transporter room, which felt horrifically OOC for Spock, but mostly it was the Kirk-Uhura friendship that really helped.

I think I'm far more excited about the fic possibilities than I am about the film itself. The movie was unsubtle, full of gaping plot holes and lazy writing. I don't blame any of the actors, they all did a great job with what they were given, but when what you're given is swiss cheese it's hard to make it a cheesecake (does that metaphor even work? meh, to tired to care at the moment). However, the K/S and K/S/U dynamic was fun and moved along, and gave us a number of moments ripe for the picking in the fic inspiration category, so for that I'm grateful.

heee, that does sound awesome. T-3 days and counting, for me!

cruising around tonight snarfing up all teh spoilers I can find. that way I have a faint chance of not coming *completely* fucking unglued in the theatre, lolol

does anyone know, if the print showing in 2D is from the original anamorphic "footage" or flattened 3D? cos for me, besides the migraine, the dark muddy 3D effect really sucks. *crosses his paws and hopes for the former*

That sounds like a good plan - in hindsight, I really wish I'd been spoiled the first time.

I have no idea about the 2D, I've only seen it in 3D, although since it wasn't filmed in 3D and the depth was only added in post-production, I would hazard a guess that the 2D print is original. The 3D didn't bother me in this one - certainly better than The Hobbit - but it didn't add anything either.

Saw it in 2D because the 3D gives both me and the wife headaches. Didn't notice anything about the film to indicate where it was meant to be 3D. Of all the complaints I have about the film, muddied 3D into 2D isn't one of them. Pretty certain JJ shot this one the same as the last, in 2D with 3D added in later

You are totally right with what you said above. Still, I had great fun watching the movie. Probably because I really wasn't expecting much more than eye candy. LOL. And it does make an excellent staring point for future fic. I hope you'll write some!
