Part 4 They kept their relationship quiet; stealing kisses on their walks to school and holding hands, but otherwise keeping their affections private. The only major slip-up they had was when Hyukjae's older cousin, Sungmin, had walked in on them when Donghae was straddling Hyukjae's waist with his hands up Hyukjae's shirt.
Sungmin had only laughed, “Make sure you lock the door next time. Unless you want my mom to walk in.”
Lesson learned, the pair spent more time at Donghae's house since- with the premise of studying- Donghae's parents weren't ones to burst into Donghae's room unannounced. Which was great news in Donghae's book, but Hyukjae could only take so much shut in a room.
Donghae was sitting with his back on the wall, reading a book while absentmindedly running a hand through Hyukjae's soft hair. Hyukjae had only arrived about twenty minutes prior but had made himself comfortable on Donghae’s bed, laying his head in the other’s lap and eyes closed. Donghae looked down at the other, twiddling a piece of Hyukjae’s fringe between his fingers.
“Hyukkie?” he asked tentatively, wondering if Hyukjae was still awake. He received a soft grunt as response and Donghae laughed under his breath. “Are you going to stay here- for college I mean.”
Hyukjae opened his eyes at this, looking up at Donghae. “I’ve been applying, haven’t I?”
Donghae shrugged, “I was just wondering.” Hyukjae sat up and leaned towards Donghae on his knees, asking why Donghae was
concerned. Letting out a sigh, Donghae avoided Hyukjae’s stare. “I’m just thinking about how… this is going to work out,” he gestured between them, “I’m not completely sure what this is but I’d like it to be something-” a hand on his shoulder quieted his explanation.
“I would like this,” it was Hyukjae gesturing this time, “to be a relationship. And I would like you,” he pressed his lips against Donghae who responded easily, squeezing Hyukjae’s knee with anxious fingers. “…to be my boyfriend?” There was a nervous smile on his lips, awkwardly quirked.
Donghae blinked, “Not fair.”
“What?” Hyukjae’s smile fell.
“I wanted to ask you first.”
Hyukjae frowned, “Fine, then I take it back.” Donghae smacked Hyukjae’s shoulder, watching him flinch and protest.
“You can’t take it back, you already said it!” Donghae whined, continuing his assault on Hyukjae. Raising his hands in defense, Hyukjae lost balance and rolled onto his back, Donghae pouncing on him, leaving him breathless with the air knocked out of his chest.
“No I definitely take it back,” Hyukjae gasped, “You wouldn’t make a good boyfriend.” He closed his eyes as he saw Donghae raise his hand, a frown etching his features. Instead of another slap, Hyukjae’s lips met with Donghae’s again, his bottom lip being pulled into Donghae’s mouth. Hyukjae pulled a little on Donghae’s hair in an attempt to deepen the kiss, turning slightly to gain a better angle.
“Donghae!” the two jumped apart as Mrs. Lee’s voice rang through the closed door. Donghae sighed and pushed his fringe off of his forehead. Mrs. Lee yelled a few questions in Korean, asking if Hyukjae would be staying for dinner. Donghae spent the next hour reading his book again, Hyukjae on the verge of dozing off before another yell from Mrs. Lee indicated that dinner was ready.
“You’re such a nice boy, Hyukjae. I’m sure Donghae appreciates your help,” Mrs. Lee crooned in Korean, petting Hyukjae’s hair as he sat down at the table. Hyukjae smiled brightly, chatting with ease for several minutes while Donghae sulked and stuffed his cheeks full of rice. Even Donghae’s father seemed to love Hyukjae, asking him about his classes and his plans for starting college, praising his work ethic and how he would hire Hyukjae in an instant once he finished college.
“Your parents are so nice,” Hyukjae yawned after dinner, stretching out on Donghae’s bed. “Especially your mom- I really like her.”
Donghae snorted, “If by nice you mean overbearing and condescending, then sure, nice.”
Hyukjae suddenly sat up, “You know she doesn’t mean those things, right?”
“She sure acts like it,” Donghae grumbled and let Hyukjae pull him against his chest. Hyukjae rubbed Donghae’s lower back.
“She acts like it because she wants you to be the best you can be.”
“If she could have you as a son she would switch me in an instant,” Donghae bit back angry tears, suddenly pushing away from Hyukjae, “And what about your parents?”
Everything on Hyukjae’s tongue died away and his face fell. Donghae’s jaw dropped, instantly apologizing and running his hands
over Hyukjae’s thighs.
“My parents…” he started after a while of thought, “Just want me to succeed, but in their way,” he sighed, “And I’m glad they’re looking out for me. Thankful, really.”
Donghae bit his lip, “Why?”
“Because out of all that’s happened, I found you.”
