SUMMARY: Summer's not summer and spring's not spring, unless you're there.
pride smile wide
[magic; summer spring showers.]
001. AIR.
She's digging in deep, every step, breathing his name, ("Sora, pleasepleaseplease,") over and over, head over heels, till in the end she's only got faith to cling to; faith, in those two guardian angels, fluffed and feathered and composed and smiling, ...but struggling, just as much as her.
002. APPLES.
"What've ya heard about apples?" he's not much of a story-teller, never ever, but there's desperation in the way he wants to make her feel better, to battle out those spooky tales of gunshots and fallen heroes with their fallen heroines; he's charming, really, "I heard they can bring two people together, one kiss!"
003. BEGINNING.
It only feels like the beginning when Sora's standing in large yellow shoes again, no longer piercing them with large yellow eyes; then, and only then, does it feel safe to shake her hand.
004. BUGS.
They trudge through the forest, flattening the grass and in-your-face swing of branches as they go; while Sora's blathering on about his adventures with Tarzan and Donald's screeching at the little critters taunting him from atop the leaves, Goofy pays Kairi mind with a little jazz in his step: "a'hyuck, do ya like it so far?"
005. COFFEE.
(She's met Max,) "Dad's got some pretty weird names for this stuff, huh?" he's got his pinky wrapped around the handle, lifts it up, lets the rich brown beverage within slosh but not tumble, "a cuppa!"
006. DARK.
They're all still a little out of breath from the happenings at Hollow Bastion when they first land in Traverse Town; initial impressions have Kairi shivering while she stares up at the bleak nighttime sky, (but when Goofy assures her it's hope this town stands for, all of a sudden her eyes are trained on the quaint little street lights in front her, standing proud.)
007. DESPAIR.
Neither of them know of despair-not while Sora's smiling for them.
008. DOORS.
She knows of doors-she knows what they've taken away from her, what they've given her-and this one, this one that twists with and like darkness itself, conjured by a red-hot hand, is hers to pass through, hers to chance, because maybe, maybe, maybe she'll get to see them again.
009. DRINK.
Goofy presents her with a drink; she stares, and he almost falls off his chair in shock when she starts, "that's not-?"; Donald manages to give her a response before she even finishes her sentence, grumbling in disbelief all the while, "those aren't the kind of happy faces we run on!"
010. DUTY.
The letter is smooth and pristine and official, while she thinks of a laugh and a smile so lax and true.
011. EARTH.
A flush of magic has her sporting a fish of a tail, and Sora's just laughing at her expression of pure shock, (she frowns at him, wobbling in the water, willing for the feel of the earth under her feet once more); Donald gives Sora a good punch in the arm while Goofy offers her swimming lessons.
012. END.
In a life like theirs, there's never an end (and they've forgotten the beginning) but by the way Sora's smiling from ear to ear and clinging to his dearest childhood friend with tears in his eyes, it's fair to say he's really accomplished something; Goofy, Donald, Leon, everybody-they hate how that's not enough.
013. FALL.
Goofy's a gentleman-even while he's dressed scruffy and smiling like nothing's ever gonna get him down-so it's only natural he's catching her when she falls; Kairi smiles, almost calls him old-fashioned, but in the end just hooks arm with arm and silently wishes the boys on her island could be a little more like him.
014. FIRE.
The candles slowly burn out within Beast's castle, dimming the hollow halls like clockwork; everything stands like the broken dream of a strong prince with his enthusiastic princess, a fairytale twisted with the introduction of a thorn, and Goofy feels cold and worried: "didn't ya once say Kairi's a princess, Sora?"
015. FLEXIBLE.
When she's happy, he smiles and jokes right along with her until she's all teary-eyed from laughing too much; when she's sad, he does the same-only, he always manages to bring those tears to a halt.
016. FLYING.
"Now I know Sora wanted ta tell ya but, gawrsh, he's been so busy lately," there's a ruckus behind them, of two destructive forces butting heads with blizzara and thundara magic in tow, but she just giggles at his mannerisms, "now, once this is over, do ya know where he wants to take ya?"
017. FOOD.
As mystifying as his adventures may be to her, she's really got something on him when thoughts turn to her island and she mentions a hard and furry outside with a sweet and creamy inside, "Coconuts, eh?"
018. FOOT.
Donald's the only one who's ever caught her; but sometimes, when she's feeling the weight of the world, (and she's all on her own,) she'll slip on Goofy's large yellowy-brown boots and dance around like she's in the circus-like she's got dancing bears and clapping seals to command.
019. GRAVE.
"Aw shucks, I'm used to it; a harmless bonk on the head!" Sora tells the story a little more dramatically.
020. GREEN.
She's got questions piling up soundlessly, but her first inquiry is into the colour of Goofy's guard attire: "green's quite relaxin', Kairi; after a big ol' battle ya gotta feel relaxed!" and he adds, in a whisper while Donald is looking the other way, "ya have ta be if yer travellin' around with someone like Donald-a'hyuck!"
021. HEAD.
The doors shut tight, the last sliver of light chopped down, and Riku's still pressing against it's frame while King Mickey's still brandishing his keyblade; so many questions are left unanswered, but those about Kairi are the first to bubble to the surface; Mickey simply chuckles, his expression all-knowing, "now don't you go worrying about her, I've got two of my best men-and your buddy, Sora, too-watching out for her!"
022. HOLLOW.
He remembers faintly: the girl who held his hands, looked at him, and, without any display of discomfort, called herself hollow, called herself a witch; he had told her not to say such things, but she had just looked at him again and said that he needed to protect Sora, that he needed to protect Sora so that Sora could protect Kairi, (although he hadn't been too sure who she was talking about at the time.)
023. HONOR.
Goofy may not have always demonstrated himself as the sharpest crayon in the box-but if there's one thing he does know, and lives by with every step and with every breath he takes, it's honor.
024. HOPE.
"Why are we leavin' Sora like that?" Goofy leans in, "do ya think Riku'd have a better chance of savin' Kairi?" but Donald's staring straight ahead, barely offering him a glance-and all this must have hit him pretty hard because it seems as if he's barely breathing, too, "it doesn't matter Goofy; we have ta follow that key."
025. LIGHT.
The islands, scent as sweet as she remembers them, are bright and beautiful and so unlike everything she's experienced in the last few weeks, (still, she wishes to be standing beside them again.)
026. LOST.
She ventures into the special place from their childhood, feeling a little lost without her boys to guide her; soon she's standing in the heart of the cave, her fingers tracing the sloppy and child-like art painting the walls, and she wonders what kind of pictures Goofy or Donald would have drawn.
027. METAL.
Kairi spends her first day at Disney Castle helping Chip and Dale with work in the Gummi Ship Hanger, marveling in the amazing collection of metallic clanks and sounds around her.
028. NEW.
If there's anything any of them can say they've taken away from all their adventures-where they've saved worlds and universes alike-it's that they've made such outstanding and lifelong friends along the way.
029. OLD.
Sora's eyes are trained on the ceiling while he clutches the yellow star-shaped charm to his chest, "yeah, just like old times, it'll be me, Riku, and-and Naminé," Goofy feels it on the tip of his tongue, ("no, Sora, ya got it all wrong!") but he doesn't understand how that can be.
030. PEACE.
Peace is such a flimsy word in her life these days, but that doesn't mean she doesn't remember what it's like; and, if it means she would have never met such colourful characters as Mickey, Goofy, and Donald, she's perfectly happy with just remembering.
031. POISON.
Snow White's a flourishing and hearty maiden, so young but so tragic; she tells her story of men, of music, of poison, to an inquiring Goofy-while he's not too sure he's liking this whole 'princess' business, anymore.
032. PRETTY.
Kairi's painted with a playful smile, jogging delicately away with Sora's keyblade in tow, "not just a pretty face!" she calls and winks, while he's just laughing and chasing after her; Goofy-as innocent a bystander as they come-ponders on all he knows about keybearers and their keyblades, unsure of how she's still holding onto it a good ten, twenty, seconds later.
033. RAIN.
The rain is beating down hard, but Kairi's unfazed-threading through the droplets with twinkletoes; she bounds over a puddle, hand motioning in a wave as she does to the boys staring at her from the Accessory Shop window; (Goofy could've sworn his heart fluttered for a moment.)
034. REGRET.
"You're both so nice," Kairi pulls a face, "why would I regret meeting you?"
035. ROSES.
Between his fingers he clutches a sagging red rose, flat, possibly because he's been carrying it in his pants pocket for too long; with the light of Kingdom Hearts behind him, he scratches his nose awkwardly and hands it to her, "I picked it out special, for when I got to meet ya again!"
036. SECRET.
Donald and Goofy can't help how much they love to tease Sora about his devotion to Kairi, (how can they when the mere mention of her has him blushing so fiercely?)
037. SNAKES.
Kairi wriggles her toes playfully, clad in garden-green socks; Goofy looks just a little jittery.
038. SNOW.
Her island's something of summer and summer showers, so she's a little lost when he starts talking about frosted-over water droplets; he frowns, and before she knows it she's been whisked away to a little place called Land of the Dragons, knee deep in snow and snowball fights with a small hot-tempered dragon.
039. SOLID.
She's amazed at how quickly she can trust them, and just how solid that trust is.
040. SPRING.
"Disney Castle," Sora says, guiding the tips of her fingers to the sky; Kairi can't believe how magical such a place sounds, "it's almost like it's always spring over there."
041. STABLE.
They've come to grips with the fact that their lives will never be the same again-a constant fluctuation, if there ever was a word for it-but if there's one thing they know will stay stable through thick or thin and better or worse, it's that they'll always be laughing for each other.
042. STRANGE.
At first she finds Goofy's constant mannerisms, exclamations of "A'hyuck!" and "Gawrsh!" to be the most -odd? distinct?- thing; until, of course, Donald opens his mouth.
043. SUMMER.
"Summer's not summer unless you've experienced it at Destiny Islands," both Sora and Kairi have told him.
044. TABOO.
When she first realizes she's forgetting them, fingers digging hazily into her birthday cake, (fifteen years,) the use of their names almost becomes something of a taboo, "Sora, Donald, Goo-"
045. UGLY.
"Not ugly," she says firmly; eyes soft, a contrast, "...peculiar."
046. WAR.
"It mus' be hard for her-all that waitin'," Goofy says, when the heartless no longer linger and Agrabah's streets are eerie quiet; Sora stares for a long moment, all the while Donald just shakes his head frustratingly and grumbles: "all this world saving is hard, too, Goofy!"
047. WATER.
"This is the trip you fella's wanted ta take, huh?" Goofy takes in the expanse of ocean around him, toes dipping inquisitively in; there's the lurch of the boat beneath them, beneath all of them, "S'nice."
048. WELCOME.
Time waits, (and it waits, and waits and waits;) the guardian, the shield, waits alongside that patient little waiter, stares out across the rolling waves and up into the sky, spots the sudden decent of her two smiling knights against the setting sun- and he's grateful, grateful he's taken her this far; Sora; "Welcome home."
049. WINTER.
Donald's the one with the idea, Goofy's the one silly enough to carry it out; hunched down, the tickle of snow at their feet, he chuckles a light, "Kairi;" Sora's blush is enough to warm the entire cavern.
050. WOOD.
"Good luck, Goofy," she says, hands atop his shoulders and a quick but savory-warm kiss planted on the tip of his nose; (he blinks slow, throws in a lopsided grin, "don't ya have ta knock on wood for that, Kairi?")
ADDITIONAL NOTES: This took me about fifty-million years, lmao, but it's finally done! Fifty sentences on the elusive pairing of Kairi and Goofy, each detailing the relationship between these two extraordinary characters and each with their own little story to tell. (I hope I bring some justice to these guys.) Enjoy!
