Stupid, stupid airline

So, I booked my ticket to fly home about three months ago - was waiting to find an equally cheap flight for Ian to join me at the end of July. To date, we have not found such a seat sale - so, we thought we'd suck it up and just book something for him. I called the airline I got my super cheap flight on (SunWing) and explained that he needed to fly out mid-July and that we'd be coming back together on the 24th of july. This seemed to go ok, until I confirmed that we would be sitting together on the flight home:

"Only if you want to pre-select your seats"
"Ok, I'll preselect to have us sit together then"
"It's a $30 charge, each person, each way"
"Huh? Are you kidding?"
"No" (and no humour in her voice, she sounded surprised I was upset by this) "You can preselect now or you can do it at the airport but there's no guarentee you'll sit together"

So, I'm thinking maybe this would have been easier had I booked the flights together - I bought the insurance, so I figured I'd cancel my flight and then just rebook our flights together - I suggest this...

"Even if you do that, you still have to pay to fee to guarantee you'll sit together"

Un-friggin-believable!

I figure, we'll offer someone $20 to switch seats with us the day of.....

Since when did sitting with your husband become a "perk"? I'm guessing there'll be no food on this airline either.....and I'm starting to wonder if there'll even be seats, or are those extra too?
