sigh. the ten commandments are so arbitrary. now, if he went and got all 513 commandments embroidered, *then* I'd be impressed.

tangentially, I hate it when people insist the principles in the constitution come from the bible. argh. they're from the code of hammurabi... you know, what all those towel-headed camel jockeys thought up a few thousand years ago while they were sitting around deciding whom to terrorize next.

I'm not so sure I'd say the code of hammurabi. Certainly the idea of rule of law comes from the code, but the more specific basis of the constitution comes from the roman republic and the magna carta.

I agree that the magna carta is a definite predecessor of the constitution, recognizing individual rights (to some extent) and all. but everyone who insists that the origin of "don't murder, don't steal, don't be a dumbass, etc" was god himself as mentioned in the bible is being silly. the code of hammurabi dealt with more useful things like what to do if your neighbor decided to stealthily move your border-fence in the middle of the night. :)

The delegation from New York abstains, respectfully. (we can talk about this sometime but I don't want to get involved in a huge online debate with mostly people I don't know)

I'm with you, Rennie. As a rule, I don't get into political discussions on LiveJournal, period. :-)

Hey Ross, it's Paul! I just hoped you would add me to your friends list, but as we're having a political discussion...

The moral code of the western world is based on the bible. All our silly little taboos (nudity, homosexuality etc) come from that book. That being said, the decision has been made to have a secular state, therefore a level of distance between religion and state is necessary. =)

Our moral code my have, but our Constitution was set up as a document limiting the rights of the State and acknowledging the rights of the People ( ... )

My thoughts exactly. Very eloquently stated, if I might add.

Hey Paul! As you can see, I've done a horrible job with communications as usual. I should have emailed you long ago. Thanks for getting in touch!

Point A: you are preaching to the choir on this post, I've made the same argument to all of my stupid ultra-biblical "friends"... a lot of the Big Ten don't make any damn sense and are anti-constitutional, such as "worship no god's before Me" about 3 of the 10 are loosely manifested in laws we use today... and common sense should tell you why you shouldn't go around killing folks and that stealing is bad juju... but people feel good about stamping God's seal of approval on their own ideas ( ... )
