I suspect babies only respond to their names because its a repetitive sound and the tone in which it is said. No real difference I don't think between an animal responding to a name and a person. As you say, every living creature is self-aware to one extent or another.

Names aren't that powerful as an identity-shaper to everyone.

People who don't react emotionally to, or aren't emotionally attached to, their names can change their name without so much as a second thought.
