She deleted me after I blocked her. Have resisted a childish urge to post a ditty along the lines of "one less racist, writing on my wall" and left it at that. I will probably be super-scared next time I have to meet her but I haven't done or said anything untoward ( Read more... )

I don't think you were in the wrong at all. In fact, I think you handled things very nicely, much better than I would have been tempted to!! I don't know anything really about the BNP or anything, but I'm assuming it's super-right wing extreme, and believe me, I can't deal with that kind of shit in the US, either. I know people don't necessarily mean to be racist, but blatant ignorance and hatred makes me sick, especially about things like immigration and illegals. It's good and well to sit here and say "oh, illegals cause XYZ problem, and we need to kick them all out" while we're sitting in our nice houses and making more than minimum wage and whatnot, but like you said with the asylum seeker your parents took in, it's not that black and white. Obviously illegal immigration isn't ideal, but people are trying to make it work and support their families. Now that I have a daughter, I can honestly say I'd do anything - even work illegally in another country - if that was my only way to put food on her plate ( ... )

Yeah, you are in the right here. Both in your behavior, and your beliefs. You can hold your head up high if you have to see her again.

I have 0 tolerance for idiocy. My ex-best friend recently was arguing that welfare causes poor women to sit around and have babies, and buy nice clothes and make "US" taxpayers support them for their laziness, oh and all the poor men do drugs, and welfare needs to be cut and make these lazy people work, etc. I AM ON WELFARE and she knows it. She made exceptions for me because she knows none of that is true, but fuck that shit. I'm not going to allow anyone to involve me in making excuses for their stupid ideas when they obvious do not match reality. *shrug* I said bye and deleted her from everything after a few minutes. No thank you!

Generally I tend to avoid talking about politics with people because while my friends from uni and work are fairly liberal, my old school friends and some of my newer mum friends tend to be quite conservative, and I prefer just to stay off topic. I think in their own minds they do too, and these people certainly don't tend to talk to me about party politics or who they would vote for although they are quite happy to make broad generalisations about benefits scroungers and illegal immigrants under the banner of "common sense" which I tend to ignore. This is why I find it so irritating to be accused of shoving my politics in people's faces, when the only way people are aware of my politics is by reading posts I put on my own page about my beliefs - I think the only time I have ever argued about politics anywhere other than on my own page has been with my friend's husband, a banker, who they don't know so can't have read, and that was all civil. She has come and picked a fight, I haven't commented on any of her posts about immigrants, ( ... )
