Captain Jack, we hardly knew ye...

If you've not already seen Torchwood "Children of Earth" and are planning to, and don't want to be spoiled, you may want to skip this post. I'll try to keep the spoilage to a minimum, and give notice when I'm about to spill one, but you have been warned! Yes, I'm come a bit late to the table - we don't have BBC America and had to wait for the DVD.

I thought it was quite good up to the end, but the last episode just didn't work for me! I can see the potential in the story line (even the sacrificing of the grandson), but I just think it was poorly written, and didn't get across what the writer and actors spoke about in the documentary of it when they were saying why they went that route.

I felt that the story line was sort of contrite from the beginning. I don't remember a daughter let alone a grandson ever being mentioned before. So, adding them to fit into a specific storyline I didn't really care for. However, as horrible as the ending was. I did find it fitting in a sense. Because Jack had been involved with this from the start, I didn't look at it as giving up, but rather the ultimate sacrifice from someone who has viewed the earth and humans for centuries over and saw this as the only way to save all of mankind. Granted the DNA scenerio would have been a better solution. But, just my opinion, I am not sure it would have had the some emotional impact. Which of course sets up the next Torchwood mini movie that I am sure will feature Jack as a tortured soul.

Good points! If only they'd have played it that way when writing the scene. I still agree it *could* have worked, but I just didn't like the way it was written - to me it just came across as too flippant a decision for Jack to make and I would have liked to have seen that internal struggle - that you explained so well in your comment - reflected better in that scene. It just seemed like the writer didn't spend enough time really developing it - or maybe it was poorly edited.

Yes, I completely agree with you!. There should have been more of an internal struggle before the decision was made rather than showing it only after the fact.

I just went back and watched the documentary thingy for it - and the writer and the actors talk about that scene and what it meant and how it came to be that way, etc. and I shouted at the telly - "Then why didn't you WRITE it that way?!" LOL
