River lay on the balcony, gazing out over the ocean. Light from the twin moons danced on the ocean waves as they lapped at the edge of the city. She looked up at the dark sky. So many little points of light, so many suns, sparkling like gems on a velvet cloak. Which one was the one she was born under? Which one was the only one she had ever known? It didn’t matter. This was home now, with its new sun that would soon chase away the other stars out of jealousy.

She closed her eyes and felt the hard metal under her cheek. A cool breeze played through her hair, carrying the smell of salt with it. She thought about the last time she smelled the ocean. Bellerophon, the brief whiff floating through Serenity, mixed with the metallic tang of the ship. She enjoyed the pure, crisp scent of this new world. Lantea smelled alive, not like the recycled air she’d become accustomed to.

The city was quieter now, in the middle of the night. She listened to the song the city sang to her, soothing her. Atlantis knew how much she missed Serenity and tried to comfort her. She let Atlantis lull her, block out the other voices, give her some peace. She heard their loves, fears, wishes, hopes. The voices were quieter while everyone slept, but she still heard their dreams. She didn’t want their thoughts, their dreams. At least she didn’t have to carry the dreams of others while the city sang. She let the night blanket her, wrapping her in comforting darkness.

She knew Atlantis would tell only one person where she was, and that was because he was the one Atlantis loved first. She also sang to him, even if he didn’t listen as often. He was busy, always busy. Busy saving lives, busy protecting Atlantis, and she loved him for his dedication. She sang to him quietly when he slept, to chase away his dreams, giving him much needed moments of peace. She reveled in the ecstasy he felt in the arms of his lover, happy that he found the human contact he so desperately needed. Atlantis wasn’t jealous, she knew there were things he needed she could never provide.

River sighed as Atlantis told her that he was coming to find her. Simon had been worrying about her, afraid she’d lost herself in Atlantis, become a part of Atlantis never to be found again. She closed her eyes as the door opened and he stepped on to the balcony, light slicing across her blanket of darkness.

“Hey, River. Simon’s worried about you. He’s afraid you got lost.”

“I’m already lost,” River sat up and looked at the stars overhead. “These stars aren’t my own, this time isn’t mine. I don’t belong here, I don’t belong anywhere. An anomaly.”

“You know what I mean, River,” John sighed.

In a single fluid motion she stood and looked at him, her head tilted as she studied his features.

“Atlantis knows where I am all the time and she tells how to get to where I want to go. She keeps me on the right path. I can’t get lost here,” she paused, looking into his eyes. “You found me. Atlantis will always tell you where I am if you ask her. She loves you, too. All you have to do is talk to her, listen to her closely.”

John furrowed his brow but didn’t say anything.

“I’ll go back to my room so Simon won’t worry anymore. He needs to stop worrying. Atlantis doesn’t talk to him like she does for us,” she walked past John on her way inside. “Go home, John. Your lover is awake and misses you, lying in bed, alone, in a dim room. Atlantis told me. If you listen more often, she’ll tell you the same and more. She loves you and will do anything she can if you only ask her.”

River brushed past John and smiled as she felt him reach out to Atlantis, asking about his lover.
