Disclaimer: Don’t own any of the characters, they're all Joss's, so don’t sue. The story is the product of my crack-happy brain. Thanks to beanbeans for writing the story Reflections, which was the inspiration for this little piece of insanity that I know will end up being some great epic.

I'm new to this community, so I come bearing the gift of fiction. I'll be cross-posting this on a couple of different lists. Not quite all over the 'verse, but something like that. Comments are greatly appreciated. Please. This is only the second fanfic I've posted anywhere, so feedback is greatly appreciated.

Liam O’Connor remembered the day he saw the “Miranda Broadcast”. He was on one of the Isis, one of the Core Worlds. Walking through the spotless city streets, he saw a crowd gathering, watching a vid screen, so he walked over to join them. Then he saw something that changed his life completely. He saw how those zhen ta ma e xin Reavers had been created. He watched the entire broadcast, and heard the slow off-focus death of the woman by the Reavers. Quickly, he turned and left the crowd, pulling his long coat more closely to his bulky frame, and muttered “Lang Di Mu lu.”

By the time he returned to the room he had rented the sun was just going down and he was shaking. Liam sat in the dark, reverting to old habits, brooding. Just when he thought he could stop fighting, his whole world came crashing down around him, again. He knew what he had to do. He had to go back out to the Rim Worlds to see for himself what was going on out there.

Liam had spent most of the night packing his belongings into either a crate or a shoulder bag. He finally turned on the vid in the room, and watched the news as reporters scrambled to make sense of the broadcast that had gone through earlier that day. The Alliance, of course, was denying all involvement, blaming it on the government of Miranda for using the experimental Pax in the atmospheric scrubbers, without knowing how it would effect the population. The Alliance was also claiming victory against a fleet of Reaver ships who had tried to stop the broadcast, and claimed that the Rim Worlds were safer now that a large portion of the Reavers had been wiped out. Liam turned off the vid.

He managed to get a little sleep before heading off to the butcher’s shop right before it opened. He had dealt with this shop before, so they knew exactly how to package his purchase, and to not ask any questions, especially given the price he paid. He walked back to his rented room and opened the bag, which contained 100 1 pint vacuum sealed packages of animal blood. He inspected his new purchase, and smiled to see the shop had put the date of packaging and amount of heparin included to preserve it on the labels, along with a recipe for various puddings and other dishes that included blood. Amused, he put the packets into a second crate he had in his room, a personal sized stasis chamber. Not real a cryo-chamber, but close enough. Inside were about 50 packets of blood. Liam removed one and filled the chamber to its maximum with the additional 100 he just purchased. Towards the end, he was afraid it wouldn’t all fit, but he managed. He heated the packet of blood in dish of hot water until it was at body temperature, pulled it out, cut the corner, and drank the contents slowly, having flipped the vid back on one more time. There was nothing new about what had happened, mostly conjecture, so he flipped it back off and stood, throwing the empty packet in the garbage chute.

Liam looked around the room. The only evidence that he had ever been there was the rumpled bed. All of his possessions in the ‘verse were in two crates and a shoulder bag. He left the room, and turned in his key at the desk. The lady at the desk told him he had paid for the full week in advance, and no refund. He shrugged and walked away, out onto the street. Liam walked to the space-port and booked passage on the first transport to the Rim. He was shown the way to his bunk, and mostly ignored the crewmember who asked “Why are you going out to Persephone when most folk want to get away from the Rim Worlds?”

“I have some unfinished business I need to attend to.” With that Liam shut the door. He began to secure his crates, being allowed to carry everything into his room since he carried so little, compared to most passengers on the Aurora. Liam sat down and opened the crate that contained his personal belongings. Inside was a small wooden box. He pulled it out and opened it. Inside were a few trinkets. A silver necklace, centuries of tarnish on it. A ring, two hands holding a crowned heart. A black piece of leather, stiff with age. An engraved ink pen. Liam closed the box and before placing it back in the crate, he rubbed his fingers over the carving on the top. He traced the outlines of an angel. Liam took off his boots and coat, dimmed the lights, and lay down on his bunk, staring into nothing. One week until Persephone. One week to think.

He remembered when he boarded the ship to leave Earth That Was. He thought he finally would have a chance to start over, to live again as Liam. He remembered discovering that the new sun didn’t burn him, which did not surprise him, he’d been to other worlds before leaving Earth That Was. So Liam O’Connor started a new life, living on a world for a decade before moving on, earning an honest living. He had almost forgotten his life on Earth That Was, content to live among the various planets and moons. Then he saw that gorram broadcast. Liam closed his eyes, unable to do nothing when he was able to do something to help those on the Rim Worlds. When he opened his eyes, Angel lived once again.
