Wash stood in front of the window in the quarters he and Zoe had been assigned, watching the way light reflected from the ocean and flickered across Serenity. He had hoped that watching the sunset would help distract him, but all it seemed to do was emphasize, in some way or other, the newest setback since arriving on Atlantis.

"Maybe the doc’s light-up toy was broken," Wash said suddenly as he turned to face Zoe.

Zoe looked up from the computer-pad she was holding, identical to ones they had all been issued. Well, maybe River hadn’t been issued one, but she probably had three by now anyway.

"It wasn’t broken an’ you know it. The gene therapy didn’t take. It’s as simple as that," she said.

"Maybe...maybe it took longer for it to take effect," he said, snapping his fingers.

Zoe set the computer-pad next to her on the bed and walked over to the window. She stood behind Wash, resting her chin on his shoulder. Her arms wrapped around his waist and he twined his fingers in hers.

"The doc’s shot worked for you an’ didn’t work for me," Zoe said. "It don’t bother me none that it turned out that way an’ even if it did, there ain’t a thing in the ’verse anyone can do to change it."

Wash was still looking at Serenity when something moving caught his eye. He tried to find whatever it was in the late afternoon glare. He was starting to think it was a wave catching the light when he saw a Jumper heading toward the city. He watched it as it climbed, presumably to dock in the bay at the top of the central tower.

"Is that what’s botherin’ you? That I won’t get to fly one of those things?"

"We all gotta earn our keep here an’ I don’t know what will happen if too many of us can’t work," Wash said, squeezing Zoe’s fingers.

"Wash, honey, you heard Doctor Weir an’ the Colonel same as I did. I’ll still be able to go off-world, I just won’t be the one flyin’. Plenty of folks here don’t have the gene an’ it ain’t like those who have the gene are treated better. These folks ain’t the Alliance."

"I know," Wash sighed. "I guess I’m still waitin’ for somethin’ bad to happen."

"Aside from you flyin’ us back in time?"

Wash playfully elbowed Zoe in the ribs. "That’ll be enough of that, Wife," he said, laughing. "Don’t you have some socks to mend or somethin’?"

"Oh, I can think of somethin’, Husband," she said suggestively, her breath hot against his ear.

Wash turned to face Zoe, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close.

"I do like the way you think."

The sun dipped lower, setting the sky and the room ablaze with a thousand of shades of bittersweet, coral, and tangerine, but they had stopped paying attention to the view.
