See, I don't think Voldemort would do that though. Because if I were him, for defense purposes, I wouldn't make it self-filling just because if people do manage to get that far, I'll realize right away that something's been stolen. Although on the other hand, if you make it self-filling while they drink...but that doesn't appear to be the case, since Dumbledore managed to empty it.
Maybe it automatically refills when you place an object inside the bowl. So when Regulus planted the fake one, it refilled, but if you left it empty, it wouldn't.
Just a thought - maybe Regulus found a way around drinking the potion? It seems to me that that was the most obvious, and perhaps the quickest, way to get rid of the potion, but probably not the only one - if Voldemort ever wanted to retrieve the horcrux, wouldn't he want a way in other than giving blood at the door and drinking the poisonous potion in order to get it?
Besides the fact that given how much it did to Dumbledore, it's an incredibly powerful potion and Regulus probably wouldn't be able to withstand it alone - at least not drinking all of it. It's of course possible that Regulus could have had a more effective Harry stand-in, but in my opinion that is doubtful as well.
Then again, there being another way around it also seems strange, because Dumbledore is awfully clever, but Regulus does have, presumably, insider death eater information. Or something.
Yeah, but just because Regulus was a Death Eater doesn't make him privy to all of Voldemort's ways. Dumbledore pointed out that none of his Death Eaters really knew him, even the ones that claimed to be in his "inner circle". Besides, I don't think Voldemort would trust anyone enough with the Horcrux stuff because one over-ambitious Death Eater would have the knowledge to kill him. I mean, just look at what happened with the diary.
The diary was because he had given it to Lucius with instructions to slip it into Hogwarts, and then he died. Clearly he planted the locket and other things before he gave the diary to Lucius.
I was wondering the exact same thing. And how on earth did he manage to survive drinking it in the first place - was he on his own, or did he have someone with him as well?
Then again, you do get Dumbledore laughing at Tom's absurdity in using a simple blood charm to guard the cave. Considering the timeline, maybe at this point LV hadn't come up with the best of his Dark magic.
I like my other theory (at my LJ. Hint hint.) of there maybe being more than one person who knew about the Horcruxes...
