Luke's in the farm's kitchen helping himself to a cookie and packing up a few to take home to Reid when his mother comes in looking for his dad.
"Sorry, Mom, he just left with Ethan for karate class."
"That's okay. I can just leave this paperwork here for him. You're looking tired, baby, are you okay?"
"Oh, sure. I was up late last night waiting for Reid to get home from surgery. I can't fall asleep without knowing he's safe and home."
"I know what you mean. I used to be that way about your father." Lily sighs and Luke puts his arm around her shoulder.
"Luke," she says. "Do you ever wonder?"
"'bout what?" he says around a mouthful of cookie.
"About how things might've been? If things hadn't ended with Noah?"
Luke nearly chokes. Wonder isn't the word he'd use for it. He's more likely to refer to those thoughts by the much less wondrous term 'nightmare'.
"Not really, Mom. I think when you're really happy with someone, you just don't let yourself think too much about the past, or wonder 'what if'."
But he has. He's thought of what if. And if he'd gone to L.A. to be with Noah, the way Noah wanted, he knows he'd have been miserable. And horny. And ashamed of how horny and miserable he was, which would only have left him even more miserable.
Instead, he's happy and well-fucked and intellectually stimulated and adored. So, no, he doesn't really think too much about Noah.
"I hope one day I find someone who makes me as happy as Reid has made you, and maybe then I'll stop thinking about your dad, Luke."
"I hope so, too, Mom."
After coffee and a nice talk, his mother leaves, and Luke checks his watch. Four hours until Reid's home from the hospital. Luke plans to give him the best blow job ever in celebration of the fact that Reid is nothing at all like Noah.
