Compromise isn't a dirty word.

Warning: This is a more political rant than I usually leave here. I'm going to be nice and leave it behind a cut if you don't want to read it.

So when did the word "compromise" become one of the forbidden words? I've been listening to all the posturing (that is what all the politicians are doing) over the debt ceiling and I'm getting disgusted with everyone.

1. There are going to have to be some cuts to entitlement programs. That Social Security, Medicare, Student Aid etc. I'm not happy with that, but it is something that will have to be done. By the way that also means tax entitlements like Mortgage interest rate, Many corporate tax breaks, and such also have to be looked and and put on the block. Not just corporate jets and ethanol

2. Big tax breaks for the wealthy also must be done away with. This isn't a tax hike folks--it's collecting what's owed. When 1% of the population has nearly 40% of the wealth of a nation--something is wrong. I'm not saying all should be equal--but that is all out of whack. Also shouldn't these people be worried about their apparent worship of Mammon. (Hey they all can't be non-Christians) If there are inequities in the tax code then we can do that under tax reform when it comes up after the 2012 elections since neither party has the spine to do something about it now.

3. Also the American Public has to grow up and take some responsibility. Educate yourself. Learn about things from multiple sources and angles. Learn what the ECHO effect is--and ask yourself truthfully if it applies to you and how you get your news. Get out there and vote. If you don't vote and are able to--then please shut the hell up and sit the fuck down. You are part of the problem and not the solution. Refusing to vote is not voting no--it's voting yes for whoever wins. Also if someone always tells you what you want to hear--then they aren't likely telling you the truth. You wouldn't stand for it in your personal life--why do we tolerate it in our civic life? So if you want to stop politicians from lying--quit punishing them for telling the truth. And the last rant on this point--don't give people ultimatums. On both sides legislators have had their constituents draw lines in the sand that if they cross--then they will be run out of office. And because both sides have made unfortunate word definitions--then they are put in a situation where they can't budge even if it was in the best interest of the country.

Okay, I'll wind down now before I start frothing at the mouth. But let me leave one final thing.

Compromise is not: You bend over and give me everything I want. Compromise is we both get some of what we want in a way that is better for the vast majority of our fellow citizens. Remember the only people who can claim absolute truth aren't on this planet. And they certainly aren't in one of the branches of the government.

Okayama I just had to get that out of my system.
