re:anne/diana vs anne/gilbert aaaaaaaaahhhhh i ship anne/gilbert so hard (SO! HARD!), and find Diana sort of predictable and boring and not at all compelling, but there is no doubt in my mind that Anne finds her compelling, and finds the process where she is expected to grow up and move on and have Diana not be as important to her frankly heartbreaking, and this presents ALL OF THE LOVE so so well.
As for the shippiness--I know, right? I reread the first three Anne books, and I'm pretty sure my shippiness is driven by the sheer love and process there rather than Diana being a particularly brilliant character. It's love for the love.
