I had along conversation w. kyla the other night in which she asked me, when I was a kid, what did I want to be when grew up. The answer to that question was easy, A writer or journalist. She asked when that was and how long I wanted it. I replied since I was about ten until ( Read more... )

I approve. I like nothing better than to go down to the pub for a pint or two with my netbook (love the free wireless that seems to be in most pubs nowadays).

I recommend the Acer Aspire One; it runs Windows XP or Linux instead of the hated Vista, and has a slightly more user-friendly keyboard than the HPs or Sonys (I testdrove them all). It's also just about the cheapest one out there.

That's the one I'm looking at. It seems to be the most reliable w. a good bang for the buck and it runs xp. They are regularely $329 At walmart. I wish I had alittle more money right now though as this week they are on sale at future shop for $279.

LOL - well, you know if my brother has it, I have it, and MICK has it, it's a netbook with a firm family stamp of approval! :)

Durable, too. I've knocked mine off a table onto a hardwood floor three times (catching the power cord on my chair) without any damage.

Be careful which aspire you are looking at...the one for $279 is generally the one with the smaller keyboard.
I got the 10.2 inch...which is a little bit more...but the keyboard is just about right for me. Your hands are bigger than mine..you might not want the smaller keyboard. :)

Why not start with a notebook and pen rather than a small computer? Start getting your ideas down and trying out your prose. Once you feel comfortable, then get the computer and go crazy!

I can't write with pen for more than half a page before my hands cramp up badly. As well I can't read what I wrote half the time.

Well, if it weren't for the penmanship, I'd say it would teach you brevity... netbook it is!

I'd recommend you focus on the keyboard as your #1 feature. HD size really isn't that important if you're writing (more important if you're doing photo edits or music editing), and USB sticks are CHEAP like borscht. Seriously.

Or find a way to buy a small-packing USB keyboard (if such a thing exists - they once had folding ones for Palm-pilots, so I can't imagine they wouldn't have something similar for netbooks).

But RSI from pursuing a hobby that makes you happy would be a terrible reward.

Good idea, though. If I can be of any help, you'll let me know?

How about having something to write about for someone, like Torontoist? Just giving you something to consider - Torontoist may not be the type of journalism in which you're interested.
