Daycare rant.

I just read an editorial in The Star about the urban decay in Toronto. It cited a number of reasons for the decay and said the city needs to address these to avoid the further decay of the city. It did talk about the rising cost of housing, the lack of manufacturing jobs, lack of jobs for young people etc. They talked about family's leaving the ( Read more... )

In our neighbourhood, children under a year old cost $1200-$2000 a month for daycare. More if you want them to actually PLAY with your kids.

And you wonder why there are so many nannies in Toronto parks. Theya re cheaper than the daycares especially if you have several kids.

Most families seem to be further ahead financially to have one partner *not* work if there are children. With what most people are making nowadays...and when you factor in things like transportation costs and the ephemerals of achievable cost savings with one parent at home...it almost seems pointless.

But it comes at such a high price career wise.

But for some people that really isn't an option. My mother got off so easy because most of the neighbourhood grannies were BEGGING to have kids visit. But that was along time ago and the world is a different place now. I don't envy parents nowadays.

It's my understanding (also as a non-parent) that the regulations around running a daycare make this option very hard to pull off. A significant chunk of daycare costs go towards licensing fees, insurance, etc.

Regulations that were introduced to make daycares safer, better-quality environments are now obstacles to decent small daycare centers; in trying to eliminate shady operations, we've made it incredibly hard for qualified individuals to run a small business daycare. At least, that's my understanding of the situation. It's not like when I was a kid, and the lady down the street would watch five of us afterschool for a few hours with no hassle.

You are correct the regulations are brutal. The closest I've seen to Josh's option is Nanny sharing. I friends of ours are looking at this they live next door to eachother have four kids betqween them and share one Nanny. The nanny comes into the house five days a week and watches the kids. Still you need the nanny to be o.k. with it.

BTW the 9 kids at 300 per option, isn't feaseable. 9 kids is 2700, knock out 1500 for rent and you still need to pay the caregiver and feed the kids. 500 a kid might work.

It really is a tragedy and it's one of those scary financial things about having a kid. Getting and being able to afford daycare.

It's getting to be on the ridiculous side.
