So, been watching True Blood to see what all the fuss is about. I have to say a little disappointed in the lack of originality. Lets see ( Read more... )

So did you just drop in on the current season? Cuz that would be a bad place to start. Start from the beginning. :) It's fun, no one said it was literature, and it's not Buffy. I hated Buffy, Angel was a good show, Buffy was annoying. :)

Also, you're not seriously asserting that Vampire culture is derivative of White Wolf are you? Cuz I'm pretty sure they didn't invent vampires or star crossed lovers or immortals, pretty sure they lifted all that from pre-existing materials. :)

And I just gotta say, not having read the books so I don't know how true to form it is, I am LOVING the viking plot line! It's just getting so good right now! :D

I just want more historical story flashbacks please! I like the idea that Eric has an century spanning story arc, cuz as you said, Eric = dreamy, moar Eric puhleeze! :D I think the Russel thing doesn't sell so well because the dude playing Russel isn't that good an actor, he's way too over the top. Granted we're talking about a vampire tv show, but he's just not up to par with the rest of them. :)

I've not watched any of True Blood. My wife and I have been watching the Vampire Diaries. The same sort of character comparison could be made to Buffy albeit with some hair color changes. Why compare to Buffy? It has the position of being the first in the current pop vampire trend. There are many older vampire stories true (I did some research on it a bit ago) but I'm talking about current pop culture.
Comparing vampire culture to the rpg by White Wolf I've noticed that in a number of current TV shows that game's system/culture is replicated. Where did the game get those patterns from? Idunno. I'm just refering back to my first experience with that pattern for vampire creation/propagation.

Funny aside in one Ep of the Vampire Diaries. The bad-boy vamp character is reading Twighlight with a puzzled look on his face, tosses it aside with a WTF sort of mutter and says to the other character in the room "I don't get it"

HBO takes Buffy, and makes it HBO worthy. Its a fun, hot steamy sexy night time soap opera. If you can take it as that, its enjoyable. If you try to rip apart similarities, cheesy writing and too much screaming, well, it would be like trying to say that The Young and the Restless (or any daytime soap of your choice) is ridiculous.

TB is enjoyable. Its mindless fun for an hour, kinda like Buffy, but only hotter and gorier.
