Figure skating FAIL.

Johnny Weir wuz robbed. Daisuke Takahashi wuz robbed. The judges tongue-bath of Plushenko continued unabated. But at least they were only able to elevate him to second place. With the exact same artistic scores as Lysacek. Which was total bull shit. BULL SHIT. Johnny shouldn't have gotten a medal, but he sure as hell shouldn't have been in 6th ( Read more... )

Johnny was beautiful to watch--but the American commentators, although they did think he was underscored also did say his routine wasn't as difficult as the others, therefore not as point-worthy? And they were impressed by Plushenko too so...

Although I dunno. Plushenko didn't look none too gracious about being pushed to silver which didn't endear me...

Well, Sandra and Scott are idiots at times (they dissed Takahashi's program and Oda's program--thus confirming their idiocy) and they were right that Johnny's wasn't as difficult as some, but it was still better than others in presentation which is where he lost a lot of points. Plushenko is improved from what he used to do, but he still is only a jumping skater rather than a "full package". Plushy's continued soundbites about how he really deserved the gold sure aren't endearing him to anyone. ;) Sore loser and all that. I agree with the medalists (though I'd've put Plushenko into fourth just because he irks the hell out of me and I don't think hip thrusts constitute choreography that should be rewarded), but it was Weir being in sixth and Plushenko's artistic scores being nearly even with Takahashi that got my Irish up the most.

From the Canadian Press:

Canada's Jeff Buttle, who won the world championships in 2008 without a quad, said the best skater won Friday.

"Pleasantly surprised," he told The Canadian Press. "Actually watching Plushenko skate, his jumps were a bit shaky, even though he did a nice quad-triple. But there's just not a lot of substance to his program so I'm glad that Evan was awarded (the gold). He had the full package."

Buttle was right on. Frankly, Plushenko was lucky the judges decided he should get a medal because his program was definitely low on content and fluidity. Takahashi, despite his fall, should have gotten the silver. Certainly his artistic scores should have been more than two points above Plushenko and Lysacek--he should have buried them in the artistic points. That Lysacek and Plushenko both beat Chan on the artistic scores is another travesty. The overall numbers should have been a lot closer between the top 6 IMO but the correct people did medal.
