» Weakness:
[no complaints here, boss] Rhode has a strong sense of responsibility and duty, because of this she can find it hard to say ‘no’ to those who ask something of her. She is not a doormat and won’t say yes to just anyone, though. The ones who can sway her most are members of her family, those who rank above her, or those she is particularly fond of. Because of this, she can become overwhelmed in her trying to help, but she would never say anything. Not one to complain, she keeps these burdens to herself and does her duty without complaint.
[i take my time, i put it back] Perfection is something Rhode always strives for. Not just task perfection, but also as an artist. She demands the best of herself at all times, whether she is doing something for herself or for others. Because of this, she can often be hard on herself. She puts her whole self into the task at hand and often times will expend her time and energy to the point where she is exhausted. However…
[i'm no damsel in distress] Rhode does not like to ask for help. This weakness ties in with the other two in that because she wants to take on her responsibilities without complaint and do them perfectly, she cannot admit to needing assistance in doing so. She can be extremely stubborn about this, when she admits she needs help, things are probably seriously going awry for her.
[in need of your approval] Rhode would love to believe she is independent, as shown by her unwillingness to ask for help, her insecurities keep her from ever truly being independent. Not mentally, anyway. She needs the approval of others to survive and can be quite harsh on herself if she disappoints.
» History:
Rhode’s parentage is disputed, however for the purpose of this application, she is the daughter of Poseidon and Amphitrite. She has no myths of her own, nor does she appear for more than a mention in any others. A sea nymph, Rhode is the one for which the island of Rhodes is named after. She is considered the goddess of Rhodes as well.
Helios took Rhode as a consort and she was co-protector of the island Rhodes with him, on which a cult in her honor was centered. Together they had seven sons and one daughter. Rhode is taken from a time before she was married to Helios.
» Personality:
Rhode is, for the most part, internally reserved, but externally outgoing. Her conversational style at most times is laid back and usually quite playful, a technique she uses as a shield. She is hard to really get to know, extremely guarded in her true feelings. Only with those closest to her is she able to express herself more freely. She is quite fond of her family and has tremendous respect for them, but she's a bit of a daddy's girl. She doesn't really have a problem showing her affection to her mother, but she tends to do it more often to her father even if he probably doesn't really care how she feels about him. With others, though, her trust and friendship can be hard to attain. While she is playful, she is also polite -- her mama raised her right after all. When she needs to be, she can become straight-laced. For example, when it comes to business, or school, she takes things seriously and is very dedicated.
Her dealings with other people are usually done with kindness or at least a little sensitivity to whatever the other person may be feeling. Her internalism makes her a keen observer and perceiver of others’ feelings and she tends to tread lightly as she prefer to avoid conflict when she can, as well as to please others. She thrives on her being useful to others, even if it’s just by offering a trivial nicety or some kind words. Despite this need, she prefers to think herself an independent person, which is really only validated by her stubborn inability to ask for help.
In her free time, Rhode's favorite things to do are reading, studying and painting. Rhode has found she has a flair for painting, she loves the way you can move the brush across the canvas, it reminds her of the ebb and flow of water. Not only does she love to paint, but she also is dependent on it as a way to let out her emotions or feelings that she doesn't feel comfortable sharing. She has a true talent for it, and because of this she has decided to study art at NYU. With a practical approach, of course, as she must be productive -- commercial/advertising art.
Also, Rhode is still young -- taken from a time before she was married -- and while she is mature for her years, she is still one to relish in a little fun every now and again. Rarely will she turn down an invite to spend time with others - no matter what the activity may be. She has no need to control or lead others, and is most usually happy to just go along with what anyone else wants to do. She will not, however, do anything that she does not want to do.
» Sample Roleplay:
There was nothing more peaceful and calming than being on the shore of Rhodes. The lullaby sound of the waves crashing, the sun warming her back, Rhode felt as if she could just lay back and nap on these white sands for all eternity. Staring out at the endless blue body of water, though, she knew that this could not be possible. Her parents, rulers of the sea, had been gone for a while now, and with the absence of her brother Triton, as well, Rhode had found a lot of responsibility being placed upon herself.
Not that she completely minded. She loved having something to do, that sense of importance did wonders for her self-esteem. It was a lot to bear for a young nymph, though, and because of that she had escaped to her namesake island for a while. Here, she had time to zone out and de-stress, let her mind clear out the fog of uncertainty in her duty. She was just grateful that she was only one of many children of Poseidon, that it was not her burden alone. Though she did feel more obligated than others, considering her mother was the rightful consort of the god of the sea.
Soon her head had cleared of all thought, leaving it empty for the sounds of the sea to rush in. The crashing and flowing sounds sent the sleep-deprived Rhode to sleep in an instant. And she slept peacefully, with the knowledge that she would awaken on her beautiful island feeling refreshed and ready to go back to work.
How unfortunate for her, that when she awoke, she had become yet another victim of Cronus' game. Without opening her eyes, Rhode could already tell something was amiss. Where was the song of the sea that had played her to sleep? Why was she not in her sandy cradle, but rather on something hard and wooden? Finally, she opened her eyes and was greeted by an enclosed room and a strange man.
Before she even had time to question her whereabouts, the man began a speech (well rehearsed by this point, surely) explaining all. Well, all that he was going to answer for her, Rhode had decided. He gave her an alias and many different papers for her to look over. Lastly he handed over a set of keys and told her she was on her own for employment before ushering her out of the office, turning around and shutting the door quickly.
Rhode knew better than to go after him, as she could tell that he was not one to diverge more than he needed to. Instead, she stood outside the door for a while, looking over the papers as calmly as possible. It was a lot to process, and she was not sure she was ready to accept it all internally, but she figured all she could do is just roll with the punches. She decided to first find her new place of residence. All other things she would think upon and decide once she got there. After she had had a good cry to vent her displeasure with this upsetting new change in private, anyway.
