It's the shape, or rather the surface area, of the pine needles that doesn't permit the wind to catch them, I'm thinking.
A few years back, I was talking to a nurseryman about using leaves as a soil amendment and he said, "Don't bother with using maple leaves [to improve soil texture.] They just melt into nothingness, they don't do a thing to improve soil structure."
Your thoughts on that?
