How is it that one gets the "Esquire" label at the end of ones name? Is there some kind of yearly contest that one must win in order to get it? Or is it an appointed thing, like Ambassador or the like?
Today in the USA the term refers to both men and women who have finished law school, taken the bar exam, and passed the bar exam. Just finishing law school means one is a JD - Juris Doctor. But passing the bar exam means one is an Esquire. (From Wikipedia)
My thoughts: The Constitution does not allow any official titles to be bestowed on US citizens. The term esquire once designated a position of nobility or social rank, so I think it seems somewhat obnoxious even if you did pass the bar.
