I figure I should mention here that I plan to visit my brother and his wife in America and stay with them for some 71 days. It should be awesome, as they are fantastic people. I'll be heading out on the 2nd May and getting back on 12th July in the morning (in time for games!). If anyone has any suggestions on things I should do whilst i'm over

About the jewels:
You might be able to "harvest" them from children's toys. I used to have a plastic pirate saber with a ruby pommel jewel. Possibly if you buy a tiara/crown for a little princess and just pry the jewels off...

As for America: I hope you enjoy the trip!

If you can't find perfectly-sized rubies you could get a bunch of little ones and make compound eyes?
