in theory you can take a boot drive and access it as a slave drive. whether you can get any data off or not depends on how dead the drive is. in general laptop harddrives require a different cable than an internal drive from a desktop because laptop drives are built smaller.
so yes, you can possibly get your data that way, assuming that your drive data survived and it's just your boot sector that's fucked.
i suggest handling it as little as possible, and not assuming that you'll get to keep it in any permanent sense as an external drive. if your boot sector went and it wasn't just windows eating itself, your drive might be dying regardless. so just getting a cable might be more worth it, depending. or it might just need a reformat and could live a happy life as an external drive once you get your shit off. alas there's not much to tell without plugging the thing in and seeing what's left.
WELL it's practically a brand new drive. I got the computer in November, so if it IS actually dying, i am making rather large WHAT THE FUCK faces. but yeah, i'm going to chat with the geek squad and see if i can get more information regarding it's status than they put on my paperwork before i put money into this.
THANK YOU TELLY, I KNOW HOW IT WORKS. I just dunno if it WILL work because of harddrive death. i have to find out just how dead it is before i order the case etc
But the opportunity for a dick in a box parody CALLED OUT TO MY SOUL!! :(
Theeeeeoretically I think it should work? We had that happen to one of the computers at work, and the tech shop was able to restore our data from it with no problem. If you can find a SATA to USB connector for cheap somewhere, you could use that to check.
... honey, you can gank music from my computer when you get the network back up and running. Idk if I have a lot of music you like, but... I have Disney???? And things. Idk.
