For Morgan [TR]

I have never really been through a hurricane. I'd seen them on television plenty of times when I was still alive and I never really understood exactly how destructive they were, especially in comparison to mudslides and earthquakes, which were an almost yearly occurrence where I lived. Earthquakes had to be worse than hurricanes. And yet, I ( Read more... )

"Who's asking," Morgan calls amicably from another room. The way the weather's shaping up, he's surprised more people aren't wandering in out of the rain, but they might be a little off the path for it. Tossing one of the towels he'd been using to seal up some of the windows over his arm, he brings it into the kitchen for whoever's dropped by.

When three familiar dogs start milling around his legs, barking and shaking out their wet fur, he wishes he'd brought the rest with him. "You must be Peter, then," he says, arching a brow and holding out the towel for him. "Is Shari at the compound?"

"She headed up there earlier," I confirmed, trying to subtly get the water out of my own hair. Not that it mattered, since it'd look exactly the same anyway, but then I looked up and saw the guy. Some friend of Shari's. She knew how to pick them.

"I was at her house, but I don't really want to be by myself if I can help it. Not that I'm scared," I added quickly, lest he got that impression, "But I thought you could use a hand."

"This close to the stream, I'd rather be in the house on stilts," Morgan agrees, giving the guy a break and an easy smile. The compound's probably the safest place to be in any weather, and he's glad Shari's spending the day there.

He holds out a hand once Peter finished drying his hair, "I'm Derek; I stay here and help Shari with the place. We're trying to seal up the windows right now, but after that I can make up a room for you and the dogs."

"I can help with the windows if you tell me what to do," I said, not wanting to be a mooch if I could help it. One thing about being recently alive again was remembering I couldn't just take what I need and that I actually needed things.

"And then we can get settled in for the long haul."
