Firstly -- apologies to people still waiting on responses to various memes. I'm slowly getting them answered, but I keep getting sidetracked because, um, stories, sparkly boys, the sexy. This'll learn me to post a bunch of meme things in too short a period of time, because I am too frigging slow and overworked and busy to fully participate in ( Read more... )

Off the top of my head, the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon is one of the best historical romances out there, in my opinion.

Oh, and for gay historical, you might want to check out http://www.torquerepress.com/ if you haven't seen it already.

Oh, thank you. I have bought one book off there, which I haven't read yet, because my Palm pilot tells me the file is corrupt, which makes me cry. I'm excited by the prospect of it, though, and the whole site. Maybe someday, there will be a ton of gay historical romances to read!

And if you like slashy sci fi/fantasy/historical you might want to check out Teot's War and Bloodstorm by Heather Gladney. They're not overtly gay, but they might as well be. The books are out of print right now, but they are definitely worth tracking down.

I've heard that this book is good, although I've never read it myself. I'm actually going to go pick it up tomorrow.

It was quite good. I actually bought the movie, then realised I couldn't watch the movie without reading the book first, so I read the book. It was quite enjoyable, which didn't surprise me, as I've read a lot of E.M. Forster's other books and I've enjoyed them.

Oh my, I can't even explain how much I loved that movie. So. Much. As for romance, I have been and will always be a LaVyrle Spencer fan, yes indeed. Not the time frame you're looking for, and very much not-gay, but so hot and sweet and oh my, yes.

Glad to hear it, seeing as I'm going to go buy it today, lol.

You should talk to evilprettykitty about the romance novels. She could probably give you some great recs, she knows her stuff. Especially about those with a Regency setting

Fuck, I love Regency settings. and thanks, man, I'll likely hit her up from some recs, if she'll give 'em out. I don't want to waste my time with the bad ones, and I think the genre is much like fandom in that regard. except the bad people get paid.

I love Laura Kinsale, I've mostly stopped reading romance books but her books, Anne Stuart's and Deborah Smith's are the only ones in my previous massive collection that I refuse to get rid of. I like everything I've read from her, which isn't something I can say about every author, no matter how much I love/used to love the. (I also like everything I've read from AS and DS, but they're considered mostly mainstream these days.) Also one of very few romance authors whose books I used to be willing to buy at full-price. You have to read "Uncertain Magic"! It's probably my favorite (Ireland! Faeires!), and followed closely by "The Hidden Heart" and "Seize The Fire." I think "The Prince of Midnight" was the first book I read. I haven't seen anything new by her in the stores here for a while, though. Like I said, I haven't read romance ina while, but if I saw a new one by her I'd probably still buy it. ^_^

Oh, dude, thank you! (and yeah, I was wondering who you were, so thanks for that, too:). but, yeah, I still have a couple Kinsale books to read, and they're all the ones you liked! I'm mostly buying the books used right now, because they're buy two, get one free, and half priced to boot, but I'm really loving them so much that I probably would buy a new one, right off. Mm, formula. I love it.

I just love how her heroines are all smart strong and educated -- the heroine in Midsummer Moon is an inventor -- and how her men are all flawed in some way and acerbic-but-not assholes ( ... )

Have you read any Georgette Heyer? Only romance novels I've really enjoyed (again and again, I've read many of them many times *g*), and while there are some set in other periods, most of them are Regency.

Oh, here too. *g* My mother had many of her books and gave it to her younger sisters when she moved out from home. They left the books at my grandparents' when they moved out and one year my grandparents wanted to ask my mother whether they could the books out/give them away - while we were there I was on the attic and discovered a box with books! And I read one and was delighted! And so the books were not given away but we took them with us. Yay! (And I will never give them away. They're perfect comfort reading and I love them to pieces, yes I do.)
:)
