He's so cute! You choose a wonderful mold and wig for him!
Personally I kind of feel he doesn't have enough black under the eyes, but that might just be my taste.
And also, does he have eyebrows that are obscured by his hair? I don't know a lot about L, but in the comic image you linked, he has black eyebrows while the doll seems to have really light ones. Was that by design?
I think it's the eyebrows, but I see only one reference picture where the eyebrows are clearly visible, so I guess that's where Volks got confused. When not looking at the eyebrows, I think that Volks did a good job.
The thing with recreating something existing is that the end result may look very similar to material you started with, but still not connect with your heart. Asking yourself what you would like to see in a doll may help.
I think he looks just like the pictures BUT I think he needs stronger eyebrows. The problem is they are hidden by hair in some of the pictures. Though I can see they are black in at least one of them. I think if he had thin black eyebrows, he would look more like your pictures.
I think the eye make-up is good, but the eyebrows are so light it looks like he doesn't have any. I bet if the eyebrows are fixed, he will look just right.
