* Because the best way to defy terrorism is to get an unelected leader to change our fundamental rights and protections.
Deriding Gordon Brown for being 'unelected' is asinine.
Gordon Brown was elected in the same way Tony Blair was - elected to Parliament by his constituents, and then selected by his party to lead them. Unless you happen to reside in the ward of a party leader, (or are a Member of Parliament) you're not going to vote for the Prime Minister. You can, of course, pick your local candidate based on who you want as Prime Minister, but it's that kind of behaviour that leads to incompetent idiots being voted mindlessly in due to party loyalties.
Or are you advocating a system where the country picks a Prime Minister in a nationwide vote? I'm sure that's worked wonderfully in America. Perhaps there could be a reality TV show, and we could vote by phone.
yeah i noticed that. personally i think a lot of people do vote for a PM rather than a party and i have never advocated either the US or UK attempts at democracy in any case. my point about being unelected was to contrast that with the attitude that we need to surrender basic rights to protect our freedoms!
