Summary: Because... it's all different when it rains.
---
Drip, drip, drip.
One raindrop after another pattering against the roof above, sliding down the glass window and marring the sight. One raindrop after another falling down to splatter against hard surface and break into thousand little pieces. One raindrop after another coming down to meet its fate.
Drip, drip.
Drip, drip, drip.
A brooding Sanzo. A solemn Hakkai.
Drip.
Drip, drip, drip.
Drip.
Drip.
Gojyo didn't care. Goku wasn't happy.
Drip, drip, drip.
Drip.
Drip, drip.
Rain didn't let up just because Goku wanted it to. He could snarl at the falling water all he wanted, but it didn't change a thing. He got in arguments with Gojyo, too, accusing the water sprite of being unable of controlling the water and making it stop.
Gojyo didn't care either way. He had nothing against the rain. It was just liquid pouring down from above, soaking the world wet, making air and things damp and unpleasant, clouding the view on everything outside.
Drip, drip.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip, drip, drip.
Sanzo lit up another cigarette. Rain was annoying. Rain brought back memories that he didn't want returning. Yet without them, he wouldn't be the same, wouldn't be where he was now. It might have been easier that way, but would he want a life like that? Still, the rain was to be hated. It caused his bad mood, and awakened that feeling slumbering deep inside him. The feeling that he was weak after all. That he could fail. That he had failed in the past.
Hakkai sighed, tracing a raindrop down the glass with a solemn gaze. There was leaden heaviness in his chest. A heaviness that he would never be able to shake off. It filled up a spot in him, it was a replacement for something lost and never to be gained again. It made him complete. Without it, he wouldn't be what he was now. Without it, he wouldn't have come all the way to be the person he had become ever since meeting Sanzo and the other two.
Drip, drip.
Drip, drip, drip.
Drip.
Drip, drip.
As wind picked up the volume, Goku sighed, pulling his knees to his chest and proceeding to ignore whatever Gojyo was saying to him. This was going to be one of those nights again.
Gojyo gave up on trying to get the monkey's attention with reckless teasing, and glanced over at the window as tree branches whipped against the glass. Was it going to be one of those nights again?
The storm was brewing heavier, and Hakkai just knew that this was going to be one of those nights again. Hakuryuu shifted nervously, sensing his owner's morose state of mind, but it went unnoticed by the healer. He was slipping away into the world of his own mind where everything was as real as he allowed it to be. And tonight… he would allow it all come to life once more.
Sanzo reached over for his carton of cigarettes. His eyes stayed trained on the growing storm outside, unable to look away from the rain, and closing his eyes only for a second when the lighter flickered warm and alive. This definitely was going to be one of those nights again… A night when he wouldn't go to sleep just to escape the nightmares that were sure to follow the minute he let his eyes close.
Drip, drip, drip.
Lightning crashed, tearing up the sky and blinding the world.
The rain continued.
