Fifty Shades of Grey 'aka' Fifty Shades of What the hell is this?

Jul 16, 2012 19:21

I'd like to start this review out on a serious note. I confess that I am quite disturbed that this book/series is being promoted as "romance". Nothing could be further from the truth. The character of Christian Grey is abusive, manipulative and above all controlling. This is what most people would classify as prima facie domestic abuse. I'm not ( Read more... )

Oh dear god..

I thought I had forgotten about the uterus sex and son fingers and OMG I hate this book so much.. I need brain bleach.. and I can't stand this book.. for all the reasons stated..

Granted I only read the first part and skimmed the second and third, but ugh it wouldn't of made any of my lists. I can't believe after reading thru the comments that some women would choose Grey as their perfect man, he is so far away from my perfect man..

I'd like to think that women are in general have some modicum of self respect, that you wouldn't allow any man to flog your pregnant belly, not use protection then bitch you out when you fall pregnant.

But mainly it was atrocious writing that made me cringe, and the language that was used by Ana made her sound like she 13.. Christian.. don't even get me started.. GROSS.. he is written in such a masochistic manner that it makes me wonder in what universe did EL James do any research.

Tampon .. oh dear god .. No.

*shudders*

I think Christian Grey is pretty far away from anyone's perfect man. The fact that millions of women are falling for the idea that he is is just downright depressing to me.

She didn't do any research, she used Twilight as a springboard and she's pissed off a lot of people in the BDSM community for completely misrepresenting them. I can't blame them either, she used them to excuse some inexcusable behaviour on Christian's part. And it's passed off as romance, which makes me sick to my stomach.

Yeah, that tampon scene...just eurgh.

This is an excellent review! I'm going to share it with everyone I can. The amount of people loving this trash is insane.

Thanks! It disturbs me how many women think that it's romance.

Wow... I heard it was bad but haven't really looked into what it was all about or read any excerpts. It sounds absolutely vile and it disturbs me that it's the fastest selling book of all time.

And have you heard about them re-writing classics, giving them a "Fifty Shades" makeover? Sherlock Holmes and Jane Eyre having kinky sex scenes inserted. http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/relationships/Fifty+Shades+Of+Grey-247772.html

I did hear about that. I'm not a big fan of Jane Eyre but I can't believe they are trashing classics with this rubbish. It's like they're trying to make 50 Shades out to be a classic, which it most certainly is not.

Save yourself the trouble and headaches, I don't advise reading it.

It is pretty appalling and I so glad that I didn't pay for it. It would have been the biggest waste of money ever. I can assure you that you are not missing out on anything by not reading it, in fact you will likely keep your sanity intact.

Precisely. I've read Harry Potter fanfiction that was far better written and really did deserve to be published, certainly more than this shite.

If it was promoted as an abusive relationship, I'd just say it was poorly written and lacked a real plot and leave it at that. However James sells it as romance and that's just wrong on so many levels and millions of women actually go along with it. It really bothers me.

This whole book sounds disgusting and I really wish some actual sex positive books were coming out that women really loved. Maybe I'll write one for NaNo,

You should write one, I'd read it. It disturbs me that so many women think this is an accurate portrayal of what romance should be and that it's totally possible for a woman's love to completely redeem an abusive man (it really isn't).
