Helping Hands
Pairing: Namjoon/Yoongi
Rating: G
Length: 500 words
Summary: [drabble] Zoologist Kim Namjoon finds that helping hands and good intentions are not always enough and that what he should worry about is not just gaining the trust of the animals he is trying to work with, but also the trust of the people in their community.
Namjoon settles down next to Yoongi on the deck, determinedly ignoring the way the man bristles at his presence. One of the local dogs comes bounding up to them as Namjoon pulls out his lunch. He stares, amused, as the dog looks at him expectantly, wagging its tail and placing its front paws on Namjoon’s knee. He breaks off a small piece of chicken from his sandwich and lets the dog lap up the scrap from his palm.
“You know, there’s this whale,” Namjoon begins.
Yoongi keeps his eyes cast up toward the sky but tilts his head towards Namjoon just the slightest bit.
“It has the highest pitched call in the world, at 52 hertz, and none of the other whales can hear it. So the whale travels alone, without anybody else to bond with. We call it the loneliest whale in the world.”
Yoongi doesn’t qualify the explanation with a direct response. Instead he asks: “What are you trying to say?”
“Don’t you find it sad?”
“Of course it’s sad but you’re fishing for something here, Namjoon.”
“In cases like this, don’t you think it’s our job, a human’s job, to help out? If we have the means to help these animals out? Shouldn’t we?”
Yoongi sighs, turns around to fix Namjoon an annoyed look with slightly narrowed eyes. He reaches over and blocks Namjoon’s hand as he attempts to feed another scrap of meat to the dog kneeling, now, at their feet.
“Stop that. Jackson’s stomach can’t handle much human food; he’ll get sick and throw it up later,” Yoongi says.
The dog, Jackson, lets out a soft whine as Namjoon pops the scrap of meat into his own mouth with a tinge of regret. Yoongi presses a hand against Jackson’s neck and scolds, not unkindly, “Hey, none of that now. You know better, Jackson.” The dog licks at Yoongi’s arm, looks up at the two of them with exaggeratedly doleful eyes before huffing and scampering off into the distance.
Namjoon watches him go, “Sorry. I didn’t know.”
"Of course you didn’t,” Yoongi says, flippant, “I wouldn’t expect you to.”
Yoongi stands up. His head blocks out the sun shining overhead as he looks down at Namjoon and Namjoon squints up at his shadowed outline.
“But you can’t always just go in acting as if you know what you’re doing. Think about the damage you could do just coming in and doing whatever the hell you wanted,” Yoongi scowls. “All you’re doing is entertaining a hero’s complex. Jackson didn’t need those scraps. That whale might be lonely but it doesn’t mean that it needs nor wants your help.”
Yoongi steps back. The sun slips past the space where his head used to be and Namjoon blinks several times, a little blinded, as sunspots dance in his vision. He hears, more than sees Yoongi walk away.
“We certainly don’t want your help, Kim Namjoon.”
- okay, so this is short and i have absolutely no clue if i'm going to expand this but here it is anyways.
- while this idea was mostly inspired by Whalein 52, it was also inspired by a constant discussion with friends about crack Nat Geo!Bangtan. i ended up not making it crack though.
- as always, thank you for reading!
