Is it necessary to do that? Mine doesn't have spools, so I'm really confused. I called a company that sells them, and the lady told me which ribbon my typewriter requires (SC-64), and that it comes on a spool so I don't have to worry about respooling. I'm really confused by it, and haven't found much through Googling. What kind of typewriter do you have?
I've got a little Corsair just like yours - don't you love it? The ribbon is available from many online suppliers and yes, the spools come with it. Just be sure to order ribbon based on the model machine you have - the Corsair uses a smaller spool than a full-sized Smith Corona typewriter. Order two to save yourself the hunt later.
Thanks! I called a company that sells them, and the lady told me which ribbon my typewriter requires (SC-64), and that it comes on a spool so I don't have to worry about respooling. So, fingers crossed it'll turn out ok! Thanks for your help!

Hey, I was just randomly googling typewriters and, though I wasn't googling for this exact model, I happen to have just bought one off ebay. Weird coincidence. Anyways, I ordered mine through a company called "Scantracker" (www.scantracker.com) and ordered what I thought was the right ribbon (I added a note stating which model it was for) and got a quick response from Mike N. stating that it was in fact the wrong ribbon and he helped me order the correct one. I haven't received it yet, but they were very helpful and they have a TON of ribbon options on their site (I admit, I bought 3 different typewriters this past weekend out of the blue--details on my blog--I guess it's my latest obsession LOL).
Anyways, I'm not affiliated with Scantracker in any way but thought this info. might be helpful, especially since this model of typewriter uses non-standard ribbon/spools (I think the spools come with the ribbon, at least the ones I ordered do).

Oh, you've been buying some beautiful things! Funny, scantracker is the company I ended up ordering from. Which ribbon did he say was the right one? I ordered SC-64, after someone from either that company or a different one told me it was the right one. Now I'm nervous! Thanks very much for your help, it's much appreciated :)

hmmm admitting to any knowledge of these really shows my age, but i learnt to type on a very similar one of these except mine i believe was an imperial and was not in the 60's but the late 70's!! mine used to come with the ribbon already on a spool, however this might have been the progress of technology, ie in the 60's maybe you had to 'spool' your own and in the 70's it was done for you!
Not at all, I love comment sprees! That's such awesome news about the cheaper ribbon, though unfortunately it came too late for this round as I ended up spending $12.50 on ribbon and $7.50 on postage. Ouch... Mind you, they tried to convince me to buy more than one so as to save on future shipping costs, so it could have been a lot worse. Thanks so much for the tip! The ribbon came in the mail today, so I'm going to try it out really soon - here's hoping it's the right one!
