Hey at long last I have something to post! I finally finished the quilt top I have been working on so long. I began it last summer and spent ever so long trying to find fabrics and patterns that let those pretty peonies really sing. The Michael Miller peony fabric and the deep rose batik were the inspiration fabrics for this quilt. Funny that there ( Read more... )

Whoa that came out big! And wonderful! I love the colors, they are all so pretty and complimentary together. All excellent choices. Especially the purple and the olive green on the border.

Thanks so much Poptart! The colors came out just yummy. Funny how I must have collected twice again as many fabrics to go in this quilt - most plucked from the colors in the giant peony fabric, including pale orange sherbet and soft robins egg blue. But when I put them up on the design wall (old flannel sheet pinned to the wall) with the big blocks they were too... something. only these few stayed in the quilt. The peony and hydrangea bunches squares sew up to a 12" block!

Earthspirits many thanks - from seeing some of your artwork it is quite a complement! In trying to figure out the quilting patterns I notice it is an active design - my eyes just keep moving aroung from flower to flower and back to the restful borders.

Hi blacktempest!! Oh thanks so much!!I really had fun designing this. I completely let it grow from the one fabric, the peonies. That is part of what took so darn long. Waiting for the inspiration of fabric and form to speak. Looking every day at quilt books - especailly the Kaffe Fassett books seemed to open up my visual imagination so the ideas could come thru.

gg, I am so pleased you like this. Quilting is pretty addictive. I was already collecting fabrics for years - mainly for clothes for Em when she was little. But I have always loved to play with repeating shapes that create new designs when placed together. My first pieced quilt was begun when Em was in 2nd grade. It is made entirely of 2" squares (that sew down to 1 1/2" squares) It was like painting with little dabs of paint and pattern. It is a firebird quilt. The top is all sewn and basted to the backing and batting. Alas it is not quilted. I lack the confidence to do it by hand, but need to find a really artistic longarm quilter because I want not only flames, but some parts of the music score from Stravinsky's Firebird Suite as it inspired that quilt.
I am almost never in a hurry I guess....
