This episode reminded me of Cautionary Tales from last year. Hiro and Claire had great plots with their parents, Matt apparently did something, and Mohinder indulged in a little more moral greyness. The only difference was that they threw in some Petrelli angst (now with Haitian!) and diabolical clichés for Sylar to literally munch on. Speaking of the Haitian, if he can hold down Arthur’s healing power enough for the bullet to kill him, shouldn’t Arthur have keeled over into paralysis again right away? OR IS THAT ANOTHER EXCEPTION, WRITERS?
Hiro and Mommy. Hiro has been fairly annoying this season, and I think it’s because the writers always go, “Hiro = adorable, by golly! Let’s dream up more endearing sitcom shenanigans for him and exploit them to their fullest potential!”
But the dual language conversation with Claire was actually hilarious, and even frowning at the same time as young Hiro was a bit sad. I really loved the scene with his mom, she was so happy for him! And the “mommy kiss the boo-boo away” power was actually pretty neat and didn’t seem that dictated by the plot, especially because the scene itself was so powerful.
…Omg, where the fuck did my cynicism for Heroes go? I know it was here somewhere…oh, wait. Found it. The Sylar storyline, gotcha.
Claire and the past!Bennets (kick-ass potential band name, y/n?). For all the amusing, teenager-y stuff Claire says (“Stepford body snatchers!”), you think she’d at least drop a “this is so weird” for changing her own diaper. And OMG, Young!Sandra was young. And Young!HRG was amusingly paranoid. I think listening to Claire and not picking up the phone made him look a little naïve, but then again the whole thing was just so damn touching, dammit.
Also, DUDE, I think the Bennets lived in Peter’s apartment. WEIRD. HOW DIRTY DO YOU FEEL NOW, PAIRE SHIPPERS. Then again, why have the scenery department go throw cash at a new shindig when you could redress a perfectly oversized New York apartment that Peter’s too busy to live in?
Nathan and the Marine. I single these two out because Tracy and Mohinder didn’t really do that much. I got an awesomely creepy vibe from the marine. Actually, his voice reminded me of Sylar’s. Sylar the marine. I think he should make another appearance because he seems like he would have potential with that whole “I had to save them, semper fi” mentality. Also, he needs an opportunity to go Hulk Smash on Sylar. Or half the cast.
I like Nathan’s baddie trajectory. He needs something fun to do. I thought he was more interesting last year, especially when he fought himself. The Pasdar-hair needs to bask in megalomaniacal greatness, not Ali Larter’s afterglow.
