There are jobs where professionals just have to get used to hurting people. I mean, it sucks, yes, that HR directors cannot just give everyone the jobs they want. Imagine how much fun that would be. But it never works that way, so if you want to work in HR, do everyone a favor and harden yourself to the idea that 95% of the phone calls you make will be bummers. Don't apologize for it. Because your job is to find a few good people, not to find slots in which to put all the people, so that's just how it is.
