nesf 1. What was your biggest musical influence as a teenager?
My two favourite bands as a teenager were Pearl Jam and Metallica. I was a Gn'R fan in my pre-teens but that ship had sailed by 1990. Speaking of Gn'R, 'Appetite...' was an amazing album.
Anyway, Pearl Jam rocked onto the scene in about 91' with a song called 'Alive'. They followed that up with 'Even Flow' 'Jeremy' and others. 'Vs', their second album is still one of my favourites, with 'Vitalogy' their third offering being [imho] their last truly great lp. They still rock, but the timing and atmosphere of those early albums was just perfect for me.
Metallica. I got into via the 'Black' album. After that I thralled their back catalogue and for me 'Ride the Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets' was their peak. Those albums are just amazing.
Other groups at the time that blew my nut were 'Therapy?', 'Soundgarden' and 'U2' who had just released 'Achtung Baby' (The last great U2 record)
2. What is your opinion on the smoking ban, now that it has been implemented for some time?
The smoking ban is a good idea. Smoking is bad. As a smoker I find it frustrating that I can no longer enjoy a pint and a smoke at the same time in a pub. But I agree almost 99% with the ban. IMHO if the government had any balls they'd go the whole hog and ban cigarettes. But they won't coz they make a fortune out of the little b*stards.
3. Irish Politics. Is there really alot of choice between the major Irish political parties?
None. Name the last good government.
4. Dublin. Cultural blight or cultural beacon?
Neither. I care not for our 'capitol'. I don't hate it either. Historically it is very important; Vikings, 1916, Croke Park, birthplace of Damien Duff etc. For this reason we shall not take off and nuke it from orbit.
5. Pick one decision from your past that was pivotal in your development. Why did you make that change and would you change it now if you could?
I chose at some stage to not dwell on the past. I have no regrets.
