She dreamt of thunderstorms. Blue lightning leapt from cloud to cloud overhead, unbearably loud thunderclaps punctuating each bolt. She tried to find cover, someplace safe from the lightning, but there was nothing around her but open plains. The lightning strikes grew nearer, hitting the ground with brilliant flashes, the thunder following immediately. With no place to hide, she looked up and screamed as the lightning slammed into her body, filling her with electricity.
Elle jerked upright in the small bed in a seedy motel that was all she and Claire could afford. Streaks of blue lightning arced across her body causing her muscles to strain and twitch painfully. Ever since she had lost control of her electrical powers, Elle's life had consisted of near constant agony from the strain of being shocked continuously. She tried to relax, she tried to scream, but when the attacks came this strong there was nothing she could do.
Claire reached over and turned on the light. It flickered violently in response to the electricity bouncing off Elle. "What is it?" she asked. "Are you ok?"
Elle gritted her teeth. "I'm fine," she spat out. "Just leave me alone." After a few moments, the sparks disappeared, and Elle fell back into the bed in relief.
"You're not fine. Look at you. These attacks are coming more and more often, and they're getting worse."
"Well, maybe tomorrow, when we finally get to this ‘Pineherst' place, they'll be able to help." Elle turned over, her back to Claire, and pulled up her blanket.
"Maybe." Claire reached over and turned out the light.
Elle's breathing slowed and evened out as she fell back asleep almost immediately, her body too exhausted to stay awake any longer. "Maybe this time she'll stay asleep," Claire thought, "and we can both get some rest."
It was only ten minutes later, though, that Elle was jerked upright again. Claire didn't need to turn on the lamp to know that this sudden attack was worse than the last one. The blue electrical sparks were jumping off Elle and into the motel walls around her. They were bright enough for Claire to see Elle's body twitching horribly, and the look of pain in her eyes.
Claire jumped out of bed, and hurried over to Elle. "Here, let me help," she said, sitting on the small bed next to her.
"No," Elle said, "don't."
"It's ok, you can't hurt me. I can't feel pain, remember? Just grab my hand, let that extra electricity flow into me. I can take it."
Without waiting for Elle to agree, Claire grabbed both of her hands, and held them tightly. The lightning flickered between both girls, pouring out of Elle and into Claire. For a moment they both suffered as a single, large spark lit the entire room for a split-second, and then it was over. Elle looked up at Claire, and watched as her wounds healed themselves.
"Thank you," Elle said, struggling to sit up again.
Claire reached out and put a hand on Elle's shoulder. "It's alright. I'm fine."
Elle leaned forward with her eyes closed, and kissed Claire, passionately. Claire's eyes shot open, and she pulled away.
"Oh, God," Elle moaned. "I'm sorry. I'm so stupid." She fell back onto the bed, trying not to cry. "Stupid, stupid."
"No, it's ok," Claire said, bending over her, "I was just startled."
Elle looked up, blinking back the tears. "What?"
Claire bent down and returned Elle's kiss. They kissed for a long, long time. Sparks jumped between their lips when they finally parted.
"I've wanted to do that for so long," Elle said. "I just never thought..."
"I know," said Claire, as she pulled back the covers of Elle's bed and settled in on top of her. She reached her hand under Elle's shirt as she went in for another kiss. Elle moaned with delight as she ran her hands across Claire's back, and wrapped her legs around her.
Neither of them got much sleep that night.
